The movie only had Del Toro as a producer. It's screenplay is written by a committee of 4 fucks. 2 are literally who, 1 is the writer of the maze runner, 1 is the director. The director is a TV director and his entire filmography is: the Spartacus remakes for Starz, working under Joss "make them MORE sarcastic" Whedon, capeshit shows of the Smallville era, writing credits for the transformers movies 2015 onwards, and the second season of Netflix dare devil. So we have a committee of Hollywood fucks and a director who only knows how to portray human action that is filled with flips and constant sarcasm. This will very likely end up a soulless Hollywood blockbuster pushed out with every "focus group" box checked off and the action will be more pilots doing things out of the jaegar. And it will probably do better than the original because of this even though it will end up a shittier product.

It'll do better regardless, simply because there's almost no chance of the production company screwing the film via advertising so that almost no-one knows about it even upon release because they're looking to game coming contract negotiations.

The fact that the financiers of a possible third film would only see the profits and conclude any possible third film must be more like the second is an almost certainly negative consequence, but not directly because of anything the second film does regardless of what it actually does do or how much anyone likes it.
