But I'm 12 eps into Gaim, going off of OZC-Live's Bluray releases that I've watched in order from W to Wizard and now Gaim.
I mean it's cool so far, the suits look really nice if incredibly ridiculous, but there's no real hook and reason for me to care about anyone in it and anything that happens. I'm going to keep watching it for completion's sake as OZC keeps releasing the BDs, but does it get substantially better after the first cour, so I know how to keep my expectations?

Well, it's still Kamen Rider Kuuga. That's objective. It's just they're adding a lot of design docs and ideas that weren't used into it.

Some particulars:

The original Gills were Nephilim, unholy spawn of a Lord and humans. They were threats to human and non-humans alike, so they were wiped out. In a sense, you could call them proto-Agitos.

In terms of ability, they have tremendous power, and are often even stronger than Agito's Ground Form. However, they're an evolutionary dead end. Whereas Agito can constantly evolve so long as he survives, Gills (and Another Agito, who was something of a halfway point between the two) could not get any stronger than they were. In order to evolve into a greater form, Gills had to absorb another Seed of Agito.
