If you have any 1978/1979 concept art of the Space Jockeys, I'd love to see them. I've been a Giger fan my whole life and I've never seen that. I've seen interviews where Ridley Scott talked about giving his designers (for Prometheus) pictures of the Statue Of Liberty because that flat-from-the-forehead nose was the look he wanted. Never seen that in a Giger pic, though.

Alien is generic as fuck in the abstract, but it was a time when the genre wasn't so played out that you couldn't get some value out of doing a slasher film in space.

Besides, the use of Giger's sexual imagery was definitely innovative and gave the franchise it spawned an identity unique to itself.

It's that latter aspect (the sexual imagery and consequent "WALKING EMBODIMENT OF VIOLENT RAPE AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE" that I don't think has gotten all the play it could have back in the day, and it's one of those qualities that has Covenant earning a small amount of respect from me, a willingness to channel the original spooky rape alien horror tone. But at the same time I feel Covenant is in ways a redundant experience in the world where Alien Isolation exists, where you can play out your Get Fucked By Alien simulator fantasies for hours on end (INSERT SHAMELESS SHILLING FOR GAME HERE BECAUSE FUCK YEAH ISOLATION YOU WERE FAR BETTER THAN YOU HAD ANY RIGHT TO BE).

Prometheus was fine. The theatrical cut of the film was shall we say pretty underwhelming. The fan edit managed to correct the tone of the film and ends up being much more interesting. the basic fucking problem of characterization and dramatic structure still isn't fixed.

The characters are still a bunch of dumb assholes we have no reason to care about because they don't know or care about each other

and the threats are still unrelated critters who pop up for one scene and then pretty much disappear.

I've read the original script and it's painfully obvious that it was a bloated patchwork made out of at least three different scripts, but at least it tried to make each critter a solid threat by dedicating a good share of the story to each.

Then the script was "trimmed down" and only the basic plot points were kept, without any of the substance that could have made them interesting.

It was Alien vs Predator movie pre-alpha script. Capcom decided to start the game sooner to release it together (Fox send the pre-script to them: 2 marine cyborgs kicking aliens during an invasion). However, Fox decided to freeze the movie for almost 10 years (and the game was launched normally).

Sure they did... but the characters in Alien and Aliens weren't supposed to be SCIENTISTS. They were Truckers (in Space) and Marines (also in Space), two jobs not typically associated with high intelligence.

In Prometheus, we have a guy who runs an auto-map system who forgets he has a fucking map right after activating it, and gets himself and his new 'buddy' lost. His friend happens to be a biologist, and yet when they run into an unknown species of creature, his response is to effectively poke it with a stick...

These reasons (and many more) are why people give Prometheus shit about the characters being stupid.
