Infiltration is the mostly the start. This leads into Escalation which leads into Devastation, which leads into All Hail Megatron, which leads into The Transformers (2009). After that ongoing ends, two more split off from it, More Than Meets the Eye and Robots in Disguise. RiD ends around issue 35 and is rebranded into The Transformers (2014). MTMtE just ended this month and being rebranded into Lost Light for the foreseeable future.

During all of this there are numerous side stories and crossovers, most notably Dark Cybertron, Combiner Wars, and Titans Return.

I'm not sure what references what you said, since I started at Transformers (2009). I should probably go back and read everything I missed.

What? No, Tomy still exists as a competitor to Bandai. The Transformers started out as a hodgepodge of licensed Transforming Robot toys and only a few of the Toys were from Bandai.

The Cybertron video games are the best incarnation, though.

Literally every PS Plus subscriber downloaded it for free in August because it was the closest thing to a New high budget game the PS4 PSN ever gave us.

But it put standards for later Transformers cartoons (aka: smaller cast of characters, but with focus on their characters and character developments).

Problem is that it's all but its own continuity and is a sequel to Prime which in turn was supposed to be to the Cybertron games.

And as a matter of fact, Prime and Fall of Cybertron had a interquel comic series focusing on the Dinobots.

Which is kinda wall-banging if we do consider Prime a sequel to the games since in Fall of Cybertron Grimlock was an unstoppable force of nature on a quest to reunite with his team and later to tear Shockwave a new one.

Those are legit BIG DEALs for many people out there, mostly casuals. Geewun and Trukk not Munky are still going strong in certain corners of the fandom.

And as much as I love it, BW did have some stinky spots, uneven writing, under-explored ideas, mishandled characters, and some people just really, really can't get past these.

I learned from /toy/ the current transformers fandom is more autistic than you can imagine. The idw comics surprised me for how good they were. Especially more than meets the eye.

To be fair, GEEWUNNers did exist in the fandom once upon a time, but most of them left in the early 00s. The fact that I came into the fanbase right when most everybody agreed that Beast Wars was the pinnacle of the brand made it a helluva lot easier to enjoy G1 on its own merits, and the fact that BW was a secret sequel show didn't hurt.

Then the movies and Prime brought in a ton of noobs, who got super-fucking-salty at the fact that a lot of the lifelong fans didn't care for those iterations and defaulted to "You just don't like it cuz Not Muh GEEWUN". So now, especially on places like /co/, there's a shit-ton of reflexive hatred for the original series.

I can attest to that, but on the other hand this surge in interest for the brand also brought a lot of old fans out of the woodwork, a lot of whom had little knowledge about the franchise beyond their childhood experience with G1.

I got into the fandom around the tail-end of Cybertron, and with the movies and Animated coming out afterwards, I was immediately exposed to the so-called Geewunners in full force. At the time I also made the mistake of browsing forums like IMDb's message boards, and that place was teeming with hardcore old-schoolers. The sheer amount of hatred spewed at the movie and Animated was fucking crazy. Granted, the movies do deserve a large amount of criticism, but it was weird seeing Animated, a show that oozed love and respect for G1 get so viciously trashed by certain older fans, some of whom I remember admitted to hating it purely due to its deviations from G1.

Don't really know what's going on now, but stereotypical Geewunners aren't as extinct as some may think.

I found the writing of Beast Wars pretty mediocre to be honest, and I'm within >>15048650, preferring Beast Machines to Beast Wars. The characters in Beast Wars had some great moments, but a good bit of it was just individual moments and the writing as a whole, even within the same episodes was often pretty poor. The one example that always stands out to me being Dinobot's death. It's a really strong scene, but then the episode ends and no-one ever refers to it. Even when his clone comes back (or was it a ghost, I don't recall) the cast don't talk about it. The next episode is just some random bot being born and pretty bleh. I've heard the writers wanted to do more with it, but (a) the more they wanted to do, like Rattrap trying to revive him doesn't sound that compelling frankly (you killed him, don't destroy that good by trying to undo it) and (b) they didn't get to do it regardless, so the writing should be judged on what they did do, not what they wanted to do.

The show as a whole was quite uneven, and Megatron in the first season or two just comes across as a bit of a joke, going out hunting in a palanquin, or playing in the bath-tub with a rubber ducky. Somewhat funny stuff, but not exactly threatening or even particularly interesting character moments. He does become more threatening, but I always found Scorponok or whatever his name was more compelling.

Animated is the best Transformers show in my opinion, but I got in to the franchise as a 28 year old (or something like that) after deciding the movies were boring cack and missing G1 somehow in childhood, despite loving a lot of it's contemporaries like M.A.S.K. and have no love for G1 because of it. I'd heard about how awesome and amazing Beast Wars was several times though, and everything I expected out of Beast Wars was actually in Beast Machines. It had a continuous plot from episode to episode, with a really threatening Megatron and strong character writing. The overall plot of Beast Wars is probably more interesting, and the designs in Beast Wars are certainly better (though they're pretty terrible in both really), but I much preferred Beast Machines. The fact I didn't really care for the cast coming off Beast Wars probably helped, since I wasn't upset at the changes made to them by the writers for the new show.

This is true, the show has blatant shifts in tone and quality as it goes. Which it to be expected, since the writers admitted they had no idea where to go with the series in the beginning.

Season 2 is my favorite, but it also suffers from things like forgetting about Tigatron and Airazor halfway through, and I personally never cared for the Silverbolt-Blackarachnia romance either (though it helped move the plot along at least). And season 3 is just a mess with way too many forced cartoon gags, massive tonal shifts, horrid pacing, and just a general lack of focus. Still entertaining, though.
