That's because it does use them for thrust in the anime. The first time they're activated makes it explicit they are thrusters even, since Loran and the Turn-A are falling toward some lava just after defeating Corin in his Eagail and Loran shouts that he's not going to die there, then pushes some levers while asking the Turn-A to respond or something and the vents open and are burned clear before thrust comes out of them (can't remember if it's in the form of air, flames or both) before the Turn-A rises, with the legs leading, out of the hole. They're thrusters. They're used for thrust regularly, like when he's getting a jump boost from Sochie's Kapool to attack a ship over the ocean and when the unit is going really fast or flat out flying it's because the Moonlight Butterfly is out, not because of the legs.

This is actually one of my pet peeves within the Gundam universe or any mech show where mechs are designed to be used in space, especially Gundam. Canonically in Gundam AMBAC is supposed to do most of the work when it comes to angular momentum control so I find cases of thruster spam to be pretty annoying. Thankfully it doesn't seem to happen much.

AMBAC is mainly useful for simple MS that don't feature many maneuvering thrusters (e.g., Zaku) or as a fallback when maneuvering thrusters run out of propellant. AMBAC was never intended to be the be-all and end-all of mobility, it's a clever alternative that requires no fuel but just isn't as fast or responsive as using maneuvering thrusters.

This. Ambac can only reorient the suit as fast as the servos can move. In super high-speed battles, burning a small bit of propellant is probably better. Not to mention that the limbs might often be used to aim or use weapons and thus become unavailable for AMBAC, at which point a propellant burn becomes even more necessary.

Nah, its stated that trusters was a waste of energy and needs many small ones to even balance one metalbox efficiently.

Much thrusters in later MS was in use of conjunction with AMBACs, with the need of fast autobalance and basic maneuvering has been fulfilled by motion of limbs, thrusters only need to push it to the max, increasing the speed while the AMBACs maintain all the control, and all that limb will direct those thrusters to wherever position it needs to be. If its done with classic thrusters system, it will struggle to even make significan turn maneuver while use the same level of energy of MS, Hell you'll maybe just flipping around in space if you even try those crazy ass stunt MSes regularly pull.
