Series like it, all Toei Nagai collaborations follow the same exact pattern. Manga is always developed first, then the adaptation that came after Ishimori pitched his manga concept to Toei. Except that time Asuka got mauled amirite. Anyway, Shinji's hesitation to do anything is what normally caused strife. They had to basically drag him into the robot and give him compliments for twenty minutes before he would do anything.

First time I tried it I got about a volume or maybe half a volume through and was put off. Second time around I loved it. It's not as sharp or spot on as Devilman but as its own thing it's very cool. The monster of the week type plots actually go to some really interesting places, the big overarcing story has some awesome points which I think make up for the rushed and strange ending and for every piece of quality there's something that genuinely looks good.

Also Rookie made me laugh out loud a couple of times. Nagai is the only manga writer who does that to me.
