For a first timer into the series, I would recommend Axis V for the PS2 or PSP. While it lacks the cutscenes of the earlier games in the series, it just about covers everything from 0079 until 0105 (Outside of Unicorn and every OVA after it) along with the gameplay being very heavily steamlined. You may not know what every event is, but a fully translated english wiki exist for this game as well.

If you enjoy Axis V, Blood of Zeon is the next best game in the series to play, then go back even further and try the Sega Saturn version which your picture is.

If you liked the Saturn title, you may enjoy Shin Gihrens Greed, the recent game in the series on the PSP. However Shin Gihren only covers 0079 and CCA, with tiny hints of content from Unicorn.

If you are feeling really brave though, try Gihrens Ambition for PS2. Every other game has been easy learn in about maybe a day or two. Gihrens Ambition for the PS2 has you managing your forces tax rates, you sentates, congress and even vacation days and hours for troops. Its a damn fine game, but hard as hell to learn.

Thanks mate! Is it better to go with the PS2 or the PSP version?

Yeah, think I'll pass on that one for now.

Are there any Gihren's Greed style games on PS3 or PS4?
I want to manage my space nation's economy while dropping colonies, but my PC died in 2015 and I haven't had the money for a new one ;_;

Blood of Zeon on the PS1 is a solid entry point.

Given how this is your first time with the series, here are a few tips and tricks if you plan to play Zeon.

Tip 1 [Rush development on the J-type Zaku]: For the early game, you are going to want to launch a war of blitzkreig on the Federation to gain as much territory and resources as possible. While the Desert type Zaku and Zaku cannon are nice, the Zaku IIJ has dodai transport support with an upgrade, allowing them to very easily sweep ground forces with ease until the deployment of Guncannons and GM's. If managed right, you could very easily occupy over 80% of Earth within about 20 or so turns using Zaku IIJs.
Tip 2 [Mass deploy the Z'gok and Hygogg]: Amphibious Mobile Suits from Zeon are without peers in this game, even the Titans Underwater Hizacks has trouble dancing with rather cheap and practical battalions of Underwater Zeon units. The Z'gok is great for mid One Year War and Hygogg for the eventual invasion of Belfast and Jaburo at the end of the war, so having plenty can help turn the tide of major battles due to the Federations lack of amphibious support.
Tip 3 [Mass Produce the Big Zam and Appsalus 2/Ze'gok]: The Big Zam in Axis V is an absolute monster due to its MAP attacks and I-Field, essentially allowing it clear battalions of mobile suits and fighters with ease until the Zeta era, and even then it can leave a nasty dent on most grunt units. A pricey as the unit is, it will carry until the end of the game. Just make sure to give it a little bit of grunt support to keep Balls and the eventual Rick Dias off of them. If you don't care to a certain MS igloo pilot, the Ze'gok is an amazing and cheap MAP spammer for the One Year War on Earth and Space. If you care to keep that pilot alive, don't let testing on it begin and focus on the Appsalus project instead, but make sure to cancel it after the Appsalus II is complete. Does the same as the Ze'gok, but a little more expensive. Just ignore the III though, you lose Norris if you make it.
