The characters are charming and interesting.

There are tons of great panels, color spreads, and so on, so it's visually wonderful.

Aramaki and Motoko's character dynamic is really the most underappreciated part of GitS, but that doesn't make up for how cruelly bland and underdeveloped most of Section 9 is.

I don't really like the chibi puma twins.

Their design doesn't translate well into a chibi form, and since it's way more detailed than Shirow's usual chibis it's kind of uncanny, especially compared to the other characters. They look more like troll dolls than like chibi catgirls and it's kinda gross.

Chibi is much better when all the characters in the panel are chibified.

But hey at least it's not those horrifying CGI sidekicks from Man-Machine Interface.

I haven't read the sequel yet, so I can't comment on how 2501 influenced Motoko in the continuation of the manga.

Also, just finished Dominion Conflict 1 and it was great, better than the first. It is funny how Shirow can insert multiple plots in background and if you dont pay any attention you lose. Also he does have a great sense of scenario and the position of the characters.

I'd say the superiority of Dominion Conflict over his other mangas is that you don't have to pay attention to follow all the plot threads, because unlike in his previous works, they're seamlessly woven into each other and are all given a good degree of emphasis so you don't just skim over them.

And most importantly: we actually see 99% of the plot. There are only one or two elements of plot that are merely narrated.


By contrast, GitS relies way too much on written exposition to develop the various plots, and Appleseed, Orion and Dominion focus on very clear storylines with few distractions.
