The world of gunxsword is basically space Australia. It was a prison colony where several guard machines were kept in orbit to keep the prisoners in check and a fail safe to pacify all the inmates should something major happen. Then some unspecified thing happened in the past that fucked up and dismantled the prison guards and after an unspecified time the descendents of the prisoners forgot they were prisoners and built up society. Then some people rediscovered the prison guards stuff and set to restoring it, only to have claw guy go crazy and fuck them over in order to hijack it and use it for his own plans.

One, the idea seems to me to include that the new warlords aren't constantly being shown as in the right and doing the Right Thing. Also, that the plot and universe don't bend eagerly bend over to serve them all the solutions to any problem on a silver platter.
