Hey /m/, I'm working on a report on the mecha genre and I was wondering if you guys could assist me and correct me if I'm wrong.

My report is (obviously) on the mecha genre of anime, touching a bit on its history, attempts at replicating the genre in the west, and the division between the real and super robot genres.

I have down that the origins of mecha in anime trace back to Tetsujin 28/Gigantor, though mecha can be seen traced back to Tokusatsu tv series prior to its inclusion in anime. I've also included that Mazinger Z set up the tropes for much of the genre and pioneered the super robot genre.

In terms of attempts to replicate the mecha genre in the west, I've included Megas XLR, Symbiotic Titan, Pacific Rim and Voltron, with the latter being cited as the West's largest commercial success in mecha.

Anything else of note I should include?

>a report on the mecha genre
That is fucking embarrassing

It was either this or Celtic folk music.

If you're interested, there's actually a governement-commissioned study on the subject. No, really. It can help.

Don't.

What kind of worthless shit school are you attending that they pretend hippy music and toy commercials are something to learn. You are being robbed of a real education and should be outraged.

Jokes aside 0079 sorta broke the mold in the mecha genera because it took a somewhat more gritty look on war where it wasnt "the protagonist and his friends are gods and okay after killing people" this is just what i remember from some youtube vid a watched a year ago when i got into gundam and mecha

It's a (required) anthropology class. We have to do a presentation on some foreign cultural thing and I was second to last at picking my topic from the list.

Fuck off retards.

Don't listen to the trolls im doing a bronze working project next semester and are making a series of mecha totem-figures. I already submitted the proposal and i basically tied it to Mesopotamian votive figures and the anthropomorphism of gods and abstract natural phenomenon.

Generally you have the main stuff down, perhaps it would be good to have a few lines detailing the difference between transformers and iron giant style mecha. My more Luddite friends always have issues with that for some reason.

>Mecha anime was on a limited list of "foreign cultural" things for a class report.

That'll be "What is something that never happened?" Alex.

It was actually anime in general, but was given permission to break it down into one genre, so I chose mecha. Would you rather I have picked moeshit or shounen?
>>
>>14970798
Well, those categories might be easier to research given how prevalent they are.
>>
>>14970798
>anime in general
Yeah that's worth the student loan debt.
>>
>>14970798
>Would you rather I have picked moeshit or shounen?
No you dumbass. Any genre you pick will make you look like a giant otaku nerd with no insight whatsoever.

If I were you, I'd research the historical origins of anime and its cultural effect on the Japanese psyche post ww2.

Maybe someone will actually learn something by reading your report instead of reading some dumbshit about giant robots.

>he literally believes this
No wonder /m/ is so shit. 0079 didn't break any mold and its depiction of war wasn't any grittier than even Nagai's original manga. (Especially stuff like Grendizer), or even nationalistic shit like Yamato.

All Tomino did was replace aliens with some other human beings, but the direction and execution is pretty much the same.
>>
>>14970696
Mecha was on the list of approved topics? That pretty neat
>>
>>14971175

It did break the mold however, by casting the giant robots as military machines in a regular( albeit catastrophic) human war, as opposed to the superhero robots who call out the name of their attacks vs mecha-monsters bent on destroying humanity because they are created by evil aliens/monsters/etc to do so.

>they are created by evil aliens
replace evil aliens by evil humans. same shit.
>>
>>14972699
>It did break the mold however, by casting the giant robots as military machines
do you realise that Grendizer is also a military machine?
