Macross canon is loose but consistent.

The main thing you need to know is that the events happened but not necessarily in the way that we saw them as in the TV/movies. They are like WWII movies.

DYRL is a visual masterpiece. I'm not sure if there has ever been anime that has topped it as far as the quality of the art goes.

Yes. Most of the franchise uses DYRL as the canon story especially M7.

Definitely watch it, especially if you're intending to get into Macross in general. It's beautifully animated and widely considered a classic and one of the pinnacles of mecha anime.

By the way, DYRL is canonically considered an in-universe dramatized film of the events of the series. It's fictionalized depictions of "real" events, like war movies.

In a similar spot OP, I'm on the last few episodes now. It's been my first mecha thing and I'm hooked, I'll probably watch Do You Remember Love after I finish the series tonight.
