I liked that it expanded the stuff on Shinji and Kaworu, I think that was the most underused relationship in the TV series and a really interesting inflection point; what if Shinji had an actual goddamn friend?
I wonder if it will go over better when 4.0 comes out and 3.0 is no longer just a weird movie that was waited on for years and was nothing like its trailer.

As someone who went into the Rebuilds a year after watching the original series and EoE, I have to say, 3.0 wasn't that bad. I can see how it would piss people off who had waited for it to come out originally and went to see it in theaters, but I think that it was very important for further developing Shinji and Kaworus relationship and will ultimately play a part in the closing of 4.0.

Shinji might actually man up and finish the fight (tm) because of all the shit that went down in 3.0. Or he'll just sulk more like he always does. We'll see.

It's crap. It wasn't remotely entertaining at all on it's own.

No. You should not have to wait forever for payoff. A good film will be entertaining own it's own regardless of cliff hanger or what part of the series it's in. This did not do that.

I think 3.3 comes from a developmental mindset of "What would the creators have done if they had more money during the initial TV run"/ "What lessons have we learned as a studio since concluding evangelion?"

Timeskipping Shinji and splitting up nerv was kinda dumb though. The airship was especially dumb, but I think the goal here is to imbue the series with a new takeaway for old fans. Fans get so mad when something is reworked/changed, in any fandom, but they all fail to realize that the old version is still available. It's not rendered any less authentic just because of new material in the series being released, Evangelion isn't being replaced by the movies, it's being retold.

It doesn't matter what is "canon" because in the end: none of this is real, you don't need a blurb on wikipedia to tell you what is "canon" in a series. What feels real? what do you pull more meaning and enjoyment from?

But you make the mistake that many make to consider the fandom as a homogeneous mass.
In reality, fans are not particularly refractory to change.
It's just that statistically, there will always be people for not liked.
This create the look of a never-satisfied fandom.
Personally, I did not like You can (not) redo. But I respect and understand those who like it.
The problem is not to liked such or such anime.
