The evas are great, but it's not because of they were designed that way. It's because the animators took it off model and gave them very dynamic figures that work well with action. The proportions we see in EoE are okay at best and the Rebuild proportions are straight up garbage.

The Devilman inspiration is way overstated. If anyone actually read that interview they'd see that the Nagai series Anno actually took the most inspiration from was Mazinger Z. He goes on about it for paragraphs and paragraphs and mentions Devilman like once.

Who cares about originality, I just don't think it's that great of a design. It does have a very memorable face, however.

Anno said that he directly compared Gunbuster and Mazinger Z, citing that he believed Gunbuster's face wasn't striking enough. Whereas he thought of Mazigner Z as a great example of mecha design. So he modeled Eva's eyes after Mazinger and made the face a mask much like the very first Mazinger Z design that lacked a nose. You can also see a big influence from Psycho Gundam MKII in the overall head. The neck portion is well done, with a memorable tube port for pilot entry. The shoulders might be the most original part of the design... if Skull Killer Jakioh didn't already exist roughly 5 years before Eva.

From there, the design gets bad. The body achieves its goal of being sleek and humanlike, but fails to be a good design. It's very bland, with awkwardly placed torso/stomach plate tubing. Convenient for animation, though.

Overall, the Eva units feel like a mid-level or pretty good design, but fails to be truly great because of their disappointing and unvaried body designs. Eva 01 does have a lot of stolen elements integrated from other robot designs, but I still feel that it managed to make something overall unique enough to not be called generic.
