Decided to get back to work on the Z'Grim Rodi today, and start by tackling the problem of the Z'gok E's loose arm segments. I figured the best approach would be to fit some sort of soft buffer between them, to keep them spaced properly and locked in place with each other. I dug around a bit and managed to find some leftover foam packaging from my Infinity miniatures that was perfect for the job, so I got to work and managed to make these foam washers.

Yeah but the face is about where the similarities end. The S gundam is more like the ZZ with its multi-unit combine and transform.

The Ex-S, despite being the bulkier suit, actually favors the Zeta more with its waist-guns and overly complex one-piece transformation.

Considering how the base suit looks, and that we never saw the base suit again until the very end of the show, I'm sticking with ruin. It is a pretty good full armor implementation, I'm just not a fan of any of the FAs. The guaranteed shift in color scheme always bothers me.

The Duel definitely needed a few more features, but I think the most important addition from the Assault Shroud was the additional thrust and armor on the legs. Those Alex-inspired armor components are absolutely gorgeous. And the rear binders, they are pretty nice, I'll give you that.

I guess it's really just the upper body that I object to. The duel wasn't really lacking in armor for the chest, shoulders, and forearms. The added gun and missile pod also really didn't give it THAT much extra utility in the show.

Presumably Phase Shift as a technology wasn't mature enough to support voltage profiles on a per pack basis, and that tuning them for the intended results would be too time consuming in battle.

So you get a defined custom preset, like the profile for Strike's parade colors vs Rouge's red tint (and how when Kira takes the Rouge for a spin he reverts it to Strike's colors even though it's unquestionably the Rouge he's piloting).

Like all phase-shift suits, the Strike shifted from a rollout gray to its actual colors when the PS armor was turned on or off. The only suit we see change colors depending on the scenario was the Impulse; everyone else had a static color, although the Gaia changed its color scheme after Andy started using it. It's probably just a minor programming feature.

I mean, just look at what a mess of colors the Perfect Strike ended up being.

Ok my first major paintjob, 99% of pieces were painted.
So far I build only inner frame, because I fucked up gray lining, mostly on 0 Raiser.
I'm actually very pleased with it, yeah there were so fuck ups with paint but nothing outrageous. Almost all of them will be covered anyway once armor is on.

Don't stress those ratios too much. I think people who are starting painting are much more worried about getting the exact mix right when those are based used as a general guide to see how the color is made and go from there.]

If you match it exactly a lot of the time it just ends up looking exactly like the plastic, because most people matching exactly don't do any variation or shading.

Just mix slowly until it looks good but make sure you make enough paint to cover everything. In the pics here the light lavender is model masters paints, I just kept tweaking it until it looked right. Also keep a little bottle of the pre-thinned mix to store until the end of the project, just in case.

Also if you get too dependent on those guides for matching you get boxed in to using only Mr. Color (which are great paints but it's best to be flexible) or having to look up insane conversion tables, when really it's not a big deal.

I also would avoid just using colors straight out of the bottle though, because then all of your kits end up looking too similar. Many people who have been painting a long time can tell when you are using jar colors as well.

they are stored there with retaining bars on actual tanks because they often need to store extra links of track to repair damaged tracks. They do put them on the front because it is extra material if they are shot at, but it's really a kind of two birds with one stone thing. Nothing that hardcore, just pouring molten aluminium into some sand molds (using the actual HG kit pieces to form the mold)
I think the biggest nightmare will be when the little holes for connecting pieces don't mold properly and I have to drill them in, but it's not like that's impossible.

You can cast the parts out of aluminum, but are you are going to have to file and sand every piece by hand, to get them to fit the required tolerances, without a doubt.

It can be done, but it wont be a difficult and time consuming process.

Speaking of Kampfers, I just finished building the HG model not long ago, and it sure is nice. I just wish they would have committed to the yellow nozzles, now I absolutely have to paint it.

How long would you recommend waiting between airbrushing a piece and masking it?

I've been airbrushing with vallejo and it's been pretty nice, but I've noticed that it scratches off VERY easily. So when I've tried masking off parts, I'll get scratch marks where either the tape pulls up paint (I'm using blue painters tape and tamiya masking tape) or my fingernail over the tape scratches it.

It's a pretty weak paint, there's a reason people use stuff like Mr. Hobby etc. If you are already waiting like a day between coats and still getting paint lifting, you might try gloss coating the pieces before you mask.

Yeah you REALLY don't want to short your drying time when masking, especially somewhere nice and visible.

Another good practice is that for any piece of tape that isn't on an edge, stick it to the table (or box or whatever) and peel it back up to weaken the adhesive. You only need the strong adhesive on things that will make edges, so you can lower your chances of lifting paint that way at least in the middle.
