Yes, so they have to do it in a way where they quietly sweep the events of the story under a rug. If they had managed to prevent the colony drop then that would be fine and fit into later Gundam stories easily (just say that the colony was recaptured and towed back into proper orbit).

But no the colony drop happened anyway, so they can't have it hit an important known target because then it will conflict with later stories. They compromise by having it crash in buttfuck nowhere somewhere in North America. They did not even show a crater, just that fields of grain were ruined. Apparently it only landed hard enough to put farmers out of a job and not reshape the land.
