Gee man, you realise mecha anime (from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and even 00s) has to have a tv audience ? Who the fuck do you think that audience is ? Yep kids. So of course you'll find plenty of kids in mecha anime, you need them to make the audience identify if not with the hero then with one of the sidekicks.
