At the beginning of the series, Chirico narration says that neither side really remember what was the reason of their war.

By some extra material that I remember reading somewhere, some time ago, the motive of their war was something about territorial/planetary claims, as both sides population, and especially the Balarant Union, are growing out of control, and so, they needed more space.

After some 100 years of war, this end being the only thing that both sides know how to do, and, is my personal view that if both sides are not waving war with each other they would simply implode into civil wars, because of their many problems.

In terms of population the Balarant had several times the population of the Gilgamesh, hence why the fatty is individually inferior to the scopedog and why it relies on overwhelming numbers to win. The Balarant HAD to conquer Gilgamesh space or else they risked billions of their population dying from famine. The Gilgamesh were of course went fuck off it's ours and the war ensued. This is why Chirico says he was originally happy to join the military to defend Gilgamesh.

It took you at least a year to get walking down and longer to get even a slight jog, let alone the kind of complex motions you'd need for a battle. Now imagine being tossed into a cockpit that is a bunch of buttons and levers and pedals and joysticks n shit and told "okay make this walking tin can replicate human motion and do so in such a way that it won't get you killed in a firefight".
