They're not only overrated, but pretty terrible as fuck. Diebuster is fucking garbage and Gunbuster is a mediocre 80s ova that does nothing special.

Good on you for having an opinion. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like you're here for a good faith discussion and are simply stating your opinion in a way to make people mad.

So I always hear people say that Gunbuster is amazing and was revolutionary. I watched and enjoyed it but I don't understand what aspect is so ground breaking. It may just be that I don't know how the rest of that era was in terms of anime, but I've never heard anyone say specifically what the show did so well. Maybe it is unfair of me to judge mecha since I don't watch too much of it.

It's because it wasn't revolutionary that it works. You could tell that Anno wanted to use every episode as a tribute to some other show that he really enjoyed. It really comes through in the direction for the OVA. There's so much emotion in almost every single scene thanks to little things like the camera angles, the score, etc.

I enjoyed Evangelion for similar reasons. Anno really just sprinkled a lot of sci-fi movies into the episodes (The Day Tokyo-3 Stood Still or the episode that was just "The Andromeda Strain"). As well as creatively holding back a lot of information until the end when most of the parts fall into place. Or maybe I just love giving Evangelion more credit than it deserves. Maybe I'll have to look at Gunbuster again.
