I'm new to /m/, but I've loved mecha for a long time.

Currently rewatching Eureka Seven.

Show me the the ropes

The sequel and movie are better despite what whiners are about to say upon me saying that.

I'll assume you've seen a few mech stuff (IE Transformers, Pacific Rim, Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, Big O, and other things that aired on Cartoon Network/Syfy's Animonday regularly).

-For Gundam go with the alternate universe stuff first, they're usually better than anything Universal Century has to offer with the exceptions of Stardust Memory and Victory. Wait for Victory to be reviewed on ANN, /m/'s reactions will be hilarious! Start with SEED, Destiny, and 00, they're modern enough for someone that is into E7. If you like classy 90s cheese go with Wing and X, ANN hates the latter for no good reason. G is also well made, but the first quarter is slow as fuck. Age is hit and miss, if you don't like the first fifteen eps there you're gonna hate it since it goes down hill after that. Avoid Iron Blooded Orphans like the plague unless you have a talking fetish and have a very high tolerance to slow pacing (and I mean HIGH). Build Fighters is best watched after seeing a few series. Turn A is a joke of a 20th anniversary series, most of its fans tend to be art housy. G-Reco has the best production design of the franchise, but it is best to watch a few UC stuff before getting into that to get a proper feel even if E7's designers worked on it.
-Next is Go Nagai, nothing with his name on it is bad, anyone that tells you differently is a snob. Start with Shin Mazinger and either of the 13 episode Getter Robo OVAs.
-VOTOMS is awesome in its entirety, production order is recommended, but not entirely necessary (I saw it in chronological order and got all the twists just fine). Case;Irvine has the best mechs.
-For Macross if you don't like ear rapping idols it'll suck, 7 and Zero are the best entries since they have the best music, the least amount of annoying characters, the most action, and they don't confuse griffons with hydras (looking at you, Frontier).
....

Lol yea, iron blood orphans is trash.
I've seen TTGL, Seen all of Eva plus movies, Eureka, Big O, Geass

I've never really tried any of Gundam though, although it's fun to say

....
-Godannar and Gravion are text book "manly" mecha, they may be loaded with ecchi, but hot damn do the romance and action shine.
-Dougram is a long series, but is considered a milestone for all /m/en here since it is somewhat of a journey, second only to Legend of Galactic Heroes.
-If you're going to see the SRW anime just know that the Cybuster series adapts things horribly, the OVA is too short, Divine Wars has some of the worst CGI in anime history with only the likes of Blassreiter coming close, and The Inspector is a love letter to the genre that is flabbergastingly awesome.
-Gear Fighter Dendoh is the best "saturday morning cartoon" mecha, best as in best and is legitimately "this is fantastic!". It is a better version of Gurren Lagann despite crybaby Gainax fans are gonna say.
-If you've seen TTGL and NGE give Gunbuster nd Diebuster a shot.
-There is no anime darker than Baldios, you will not find it. Someone will suggest Bokurano, that series is a joke.
-The Aquarion trilogy is best seen only if you're not going to drop it, each series is somewhat of a spiritual journey with surprisingly good philosophy and are. The first series deals with mythology, the second fairy tales, and the third literature. Also Aquarion Logos is the most powerful fictional entity ever, even the Living Tribunal can't beat him.
-Zegapain is the best mature/adult themes anime out there along with one of the best romances ever second only to Escaflowne (which is also highly recommended).
-Watch Dai-Guard and Xabungle if you're into comedy.
-Avoid Valvrave The Liberator unless you have a gag fetish, then watch episode 7 and leave the rest of it alone. Trust me, it is soul crushingly awful.
-Cross Ange is Valvrave without most of the problems and better for gag fetishists.
-If you don't like slice of life anime avoid Patlabor.
-If you like fantasy anime go with Escaflowne, Dunbine, and Ryu Knight.
-Most Yuusha/Braves series are awesome with the exception of Goldran

-If you want to give 80s super robots a try, Braiger and Dancouga are ideal. For real robots go with Orguss and Dragonar. Dancouga Nova is standalone enough to get into no problem, /m/ treats its porn scarcity as a running joke.
-If you like pulpy space adventures give Ideon and Heroic Age a shot.
-Then there is Tatsunoko: Tekkaman both the original and Blade are classics although the latter sadly ends on a cliffhanger. Hurricane Polymar is Scooby Doo meets Bruce Lee meets 60s Batman, it's campy and awesome. For Casshern the original series is classic and is the first /m/ series Yoshiyuki Tomino worked on, Robot Hunters was a great OVA retelling, the live action movie had its moments, and Sins was horrible and trying too hard to be edgy while failing.
-Zoids is a classic if you're into animal designs, the original 67 episode series is the best. Fuzors is similar to G Gundam and New Century Zero is basically the good stuff lite. Genesis is also pretty good, but takes itself too seriously.
-If you don't like slice of life anime avoid Patlabor.
-The Robot Romance Trilogy is a good start to get into 70s robot anime with solid action and writing; Daltanious is a good successor but very fucking comedic, almost borderline Looney Toons at times. Golion is also a spiritual successor, but hot damn was it violent.
-There is no /m/ series worse than Infinite Ryvius, do not test your luck otherwise. The "but muh lord o' flies" defenders are only going to lure you in like sirens.
-On to toku next post

I'll try Gunbuster and Diebuster first, gotta pay my respects to Gainax.

I'm more into surreal mecha, which is why I love E7 and good ol' Eva.

I prefer mech design and character development over anything else, if I had to name my favorite qualities.
Weapon and equipment arming scenes are always great too.

-There is no bad Ultraman entry, just watch anything. Try to support the parent companies via Crunchyroll if you decide to do so, Tsubaraya got the rights for their first six shows stolen by a Thai company named Chaiyo.
-Bio Planet WoO and Daimajin Kanon suck ass.
-Tekkouki Mikazuki, the first Garo, Kikaider, Inazuman, Gavan, Giant Robo, and Red Baron are strong starting points for tokusatsu.
-Inazuman Flash is the best 70s tokusatsu.
-You will not find a worse case of tone whiplash than Daitetsujin 17.
-Most Kamen Rider entries are solid, some more than others. Kabuto is the worst series, The Next is even worse than that. Gaim is best avoided as a first series since it gives off a very wrong impression of the franchise. Decade is a good entry point for quick summaries of the early modern riders.
-Super Sentai is entirely standalones, most are good with a few exceptions. The only bad entry is Megaranger.
-With the exception of the Kiryu movies there is no bad Godzilla movie.
-Zeiram 1 and 2 are pretty solid, the prequel OVA (Iria) is also worth looking at.
>>14929117
Based on that I bequeath: Demonbane, RahXephon, Genesis of Aquarion, Brave Raideen, King Gainer, Devadasy, Dangaizer 3, and for chuckles I'll throw in Heavy Object to start you off. I'd include Concrete Revolutio except that was a slow paced mess.

Part of it is a clip show but an adequate conclusion otherwise. Severe lack of Baldios itself though.

This is bait. The only possible way I can imagine someone being able to enjoy the film would be if they'd never seen the show, because the film shits all over everything you'd have come to know and love from the show.

As for the sequel, it was literally a show about nothing, its own ending retconned the entire show's """""""""story""""""""" from ever having taken place. The first dozen episodes were monster of the week crap where nothing else happened, there were three or four decent episodes when eureka shows up then it stalls again after ao gets the quartz gun and doesn't have the balls to do anything for the rest of the show.

You need to watch the pioneering 3 real robot shows at some point.

>Mobile Suit Gundam( UC Gundam shows and shows set in it's connected timelines in general are better than anything you will get from an AU Gundam)
>Dougram
>Macross

And you should check out
> Votoms
> Layzner
> Dunbine
> Ideon ( for the sake of the conclusion movie "Be Invoked)
>The Patlabor Movies

And some of the nice 80s OVAs
>Megazone 23
>Bubblegum Crisis
>Iczer 1

Some other good ones
> Genocyber
> King Gainer
> Gasaraki
> Brain Powerd
> Infinite Ryvius
> Escaflowne

And if you want to read a really great manga with good mecha I would recommend Shirow Masamune's Appleseed.

I didn't list any of the 70s stuff but Mecha was at it's best in the 70s-90s.

As a general rule, watch the original seties before watching a clone of it. Eureka Seven is pretty good but it's a lot better if you watch 0079 first.

Dougram came out in 1981 and went a bit further in its real robot styling than Gundam did, which was the most real robot oriented show before it, unless you want to count Tetsujin 28.

No.
Coming from someone who even enjoyed Geass it really fails in comparison to the even the middle of the road quality stuff from the 80s, and was'nt close to as good as the best of the 70s and 90s.

>>14932826

>>dat philosophical debate

If you watch more shows in the genre that preceded the show you will find that it is pretty standard stuff.

>>better mobile suits

They don't use mobile suits. The S1 Mecha designs were nice, but its no Layzner or Zeta Gundam.

They had some really great duels ( mainly just the Suzaku vs Kallen stuff) but even 0079 had better ones.

not really

the series drags a bit even for moonSF standards, but the movie is just a mess

it's like going for the Cliffs Notes for Lovecraft

the journey and the way it develops is much of the point, otherwise it just ends up "It's gonna rise, it rises, everybody dies, the end."

If you aren't invested by that point in Inspector Detector and his dark-skinned monster person hunts then you won't care too much when he turns into one.
