Merits a mention to say this is animated by Hideaki Anno's studio Khara, while scripts and general look are handled by the guy behind Eve no Jikan. The guy who wrote the scripts for the Previous Patlabor movies is in too, apparently.

I don't really care for the cast, but pretty much everything else was spot on. The humour, music and just general flow were all patlabor. CG was actually really nice as well. The social media bits felt really natural, sometimes in shows that can seem a little forced in with whoever not getting how it works.

It really is just the characters who drag it down, they are on the verge of being generic modern anime. But it isn't like the originals are amazing for being unique but how they are handled so they could turn out good if more comes.

i really do think that Patlabor could use another series. the seven episodes of the OVA are nearly perfect in my eyes, and couldn't help but adore all but one of them.
but, it just ends too early, and the TV show while not bad, is extremely lacking in many areas that the OVA shined in, coupled with a mediocre start.

regardless, while i'm going to go completely against the idea of having a new cast, i really don't see the reason as to why they didn't use the original characters. they're fantastic.

I don't think you really get what the issue with CGI is. It's not that people can't do it. They can. It's rather easy in fact. The issue is that they can't do it on a tight budget, spread over a long period of time with a tight dead line. This was a 7 minute short that took months to to make, of course it will look alright.
