So yeah, Gundam as a whole is a very average franchise, it has like 30 series and only a handful of those are good, the rest range from mediocre to bad.

And now people wil cry because I didn't put Thunderbolt or some shit, let me tell you one thing, YES cool mech stuff and fights are a good thing, but characters being poorly written and story being poorly written are NOT, and those are more important.

Mecha anime needs to use mecha as a bonus, if all you have going on is pretty animation and nonsensical fights it just becomes a shitty battle series, the most important thing is the writing

Good mech action + shit characters and story = shit series

Good mech action + decent characters and story = good series

Good mech action + good characters and story = great.

In fact a lot of what he does in it is inspired by Ring ni Kakero. Of course there's also Saint Seiya stuff as he himself admitted the glow is because of Saint Seiya in interviews but RnK references are much more obvious and basically everyone uses them, not to mention that it's basically the template for battle shonen manga you've seen since the 80's.
