What does /m/ think of combiner-type mechs?

Don't really see them outside of the "super robot" subgenre -- even then it's usually some lame robot slotting into another slightly bigger robot.
>>
They're great but it feels pointless when they eventually just start fights combining. What's the point of having the smaller robots then?

good point

I always wished they would fight more as the dinosaurs and tank mode

atleast in a series like... Wild force? its been to long.. the modular pieces served purposes (Polar bear ice beam woot)

I fantasize about a Giant Graze that is made up of 5 Graze

Combiners made up of non-humanoids can often feel pointless individually, but the ones where a central independent unit is made more powerful by combining with the other parts like the Dairanger mecha is nice.

Now, when you take two individually powerful mecha and take the best parts of both of them to create one bigger and meaner mecha, that's when you've nailed it.

I think Gattai is super fucking rad and my favorite mechs are Getter and Voltron/Golion. Getter really takes advantage of the mech being comprised of Getter jets, and open get to avoid attacks or change forms on the fly is so fucking cool. I like that the Netflix reboot has made the individual lions more capable as the older show rarely had them fight in their own outside a single attack or two, where as in Legendary Defender they fight almost just as often separate as they do together and have done full missions in their lions.

I hear Dancouga is also really good about making the individual mechs actually matter.

Megazord is made up of smaller robots each of them comprising a large assembly of bigger robot (arm, leg, torso, etc). They're not being put inside a larger frame of a bigger robot as is the case with something like a Neo-Zeong or GN Arms. Fundamentally, it's a very different approach.

>>

Because you said it´s often the case of combiners being about a small mech going into a bigger mech when it´s not and even the example you posted didn´t help.
>>
I like non-standard combinations, like GenRyuJin & GouRyuJin.
>>
I think the original example of this is still one of the best ones. In Getter Robo the form of the combined mecha changes based on the order the three jets that make it up combine in. The advantage of this is that the pilots can combine, uncombine and recombine on the fly to gain an advantage over the current opponent. There's one scene in Shin where the Getter team has to fight a more advanced stolen Getter machine, and they use their experience and ability to combine faster than the enemy to win the battle. They do a repeat of it in Armageddon, the circumstances are a little different but the principle is the same. Aquarion has a similar sort of principle too, and they use it quite well, but probably not as well as Getter because the abilities of the three separate forms don't feel quite as distinct.

No, I didn't.

Look at the structure of the sentence in the OP >>14902529
>Don't really see them outside of the "super robot" subgenre -- even then it's usually some lame robot slotting into another slightly bigger robot.
...I was clearly speaking in context of "outside the super robot subgenre" (which some would call "real robot"). Within that realm, whenever we see two robots docking, it's usually a smaller robot "slotting into another slightly bigger robot" which would thus not make it a true combiner-type as per the distinction in >>14902653.

The reason I posted the picture of the Megazord was because it's a true combine -- not smaller robots physically being put inside of a bigger robot. The fact that the 17 other posters in this thread were able to make that distinction, but you were not able to shows that it is your reading comprehension that is questionable here.

Episode 16, and there are a few episodes after that where they still don't combine

Curiously, the individual robots seem to be more powerful in beast mode than in humanoid mode, which is even stranger because they have access to the beast modes first

Dancouga was incredibly unconventional with how it treated its robots
>>
>>14903430
What I like about Dancouga is that each of its forms have their purpose.

Vehicular forms: Standard armored warfare
Humanoid forms: Doing human-y stuff (firefights like upsized infantry)
Beastial forms: Awaken innate animal instincts within pilot
Dancouga: transcendence beyond beasts beyond humans
>>
>>14902546

That's why Dancouga never gives us the final combined form until like episode 17.
>>
>>14903297
Yeah it's hard to pull off perfectly portioned getters without anime magic.
>>
>>14903430
Dancouga in general is unconventional. I don't have the screencap of the failed general being forgiven, but that's a big one.

>TakaTomy made two transformers with Getter's combination scheme 2 years back.

They actually went beyond Getter-type combinations, because each individual robot could transform (robot/vehicle or robot/beast), there were seven individual robots and they were all compatible with each other (though normally only interacted with their two teammates), and you could form a combiner from only two robots if you wanted to.

True, the toys are pretty damn awkward, but at least they work. It's almost impossible to make a working toy of most Getters, since they cheat on their transformations so much. (GR Go is an exception of course.) I mean, I've seen a couple of fully-functional getter toys, but they're basically nothing but a cluster of joints and hinges.

Getter Go kinda cheats in another way: by offloading one component into a (barely transformed) backpack. It's a smart way to make the DX toy work though.

One of my favorite bits was in episode 3 or 4 of Dancouga Nova. The previous episode ends on a cliffhanger with their combined robot being constricted by a giant snake bot all super dramatically and when the next episode starts they had already resolved the issue by decombining off screen and where all, almost manically tearing it a new asshole with their individual robots.
>>
>>14903489
>offloading one component into a (barely transformed) backpack

Pretty much what Aquarion does too...

>Don't really see them outside of the "super robot" subgenre

Combiners are indeed rare in the Real Robot genre, though it has happened. Victory Gundam kinda counts, and the Legioss+Tread combo definitely counts. Though it does fall under your "robot slotting into another slightly bigger robot" caveat.

Wonder if this is true about the Legioss+Tread combo

"the Legioss was designed as a stand alone toy by Shinji Aramaki.. Gakken decided that they needed more transforming mecha in Mospeada so they had another designer, Hideki Kakinuma design the Tread, with no set means to connect them. In the show, animators relied on “Anime Magic” to make the transformation work. Unfortunately, that left today’s toymakers in the dark as to how they connected, and each maker has to come up with their own solution."

Zoids' Weiß Tiger (Weiß Wolf + Savinga) is a rare example of a Real-type combiner.
>>
>>14903707

Looking at them, the Legioss and Tread were indeed almost definitely designed by different people. I knew that the Legioss was Aramaki, and it would make sense that the Tread is by Kakinuma. It fits his style, and they both worked at Artmic at the time.

I don't think the "Anime Magic" comment is entirely fair... But I don't think it's entirely unfair either.

Combining robots always have and will be, my jam.
Whether it's a 5 in 1 Super Sentai robot, or two or three robots that actually are formidable on their own that combine to make one powerhouse.

I just hate the ones that are glorified accessories to the main mecha, like the Zeo Battlezord or whatever the red one was called.
Unless they're massive ones like Pyramidas, that takes the edge off a bit.
