0800 is not a masterpiece. It was Sunrise's last attempt to keep an interest in Gundam. Yep by the late 80s Japanese didn't give a shit anymore about Gundam. It was seen as a has-been series.

I actually didn't enjoy 0080 as much as I did some other Gundams like 0083; only two major fights over 6 OVA episodes was kind of underwhelming desu

But I still really love it as a character story. As a matter of fact I watched 0080 with my little cousin just last week and after we finished my aunt told me that she was crying in bed

More that it's an easy suggestion to induct people into the UC. Short, focused, a side story with some harmless retcons that work. There's less to hate and part of the UC koolaid. I like it, but never thought it's comparable to full length shows because of it's pass into competency.

I'm using pass as a verb. It's a whole different order to make a 26+ episode show than being constrained/designed to 6-12 episodes. Same reason /m/ dissuades the compilation movies. A 6 episode show that does most things well start to finish, versus a 50 episode show that has bigger highs and lows. It's not quite comparable by the end.

The Alex was hardly wrecked. The head and one arm gatling had been cut off (not destroyed, just removed) and there was a gash in the stomach. Which is pretty superficial damage. The crew of the Argama repaired worse damage to the Methuss in short order several times if I recall. Putting it back to rights would only take a day or two at most, and could be done in transit to any new base that it was being transferred to. More importantly I suppose, most of that damage was done when Bernie was attacking from cover. As soon as it was out in the open Chris finished the fight in one move despite having only a beam saber, and only suffered a cockpit gash in return.
