Is Gundam IBO is closest we are going to get a battletech Gundam series?
Setup is quite similar to the star league- succession war era.

Does this game hold up? I remember seeing it in a gaming magazine as a kid but I didn't have a PC. Hell, does it even run on modern systems?

Lore is good.
Gameplay is fine since it's just like Mechwarrior games.
Grab it from the official website, it's now a free download

>>14861238
Is that why IBO is so shit?
>>14861532
No because if it was that kind of shit, we'd be getting some incredible memes out of it.
>KNOWLEDGE IS AMMUNITION
>>14861532
Vocal minority of their fandoms like to screm how "real" it is.
Battletech does have some good ideas though.
>>14861515
Thanks, I'll give it a whirl.
>>14861546
>YOU DARE REFUSE MY BATCHALL!?
I love Battletech TAS, it's so dumb yet so endearing.
>>14861591
>Battletech does have some good ideas though.
Not really.
The whole thing is built as this way of bringing giant robots to people who haven§t heard of it and that worked.
It also did what all of sci-fi had done and ripped off Dune (the houses, story) and threw in a bit of Mad Max, both of which were IN at the time.
Once they had to do something for themselves, it all fell apart.
No designers (hence the overabundance of shitty looking robots), no decent writers (thus a bad story) and a badly done game system which fell apart once they added anything to it.
It§s fun, enjoyable and a good historical artifact, but it didn't really come up with anything resembling good ideas that are its own.
>>14861635
>but it didn't really come up with anything resembling good ideas that are its own.
Just like IBO?
>>14861635
Vidya were good though.IMO, lore till the end of Clan Invasion is pretty entertaining.
>>14861238
>Is Gundam IBO is closest we are going to get a battletech Gundam series?
Not really, no, the Social Generals wouldn't have used swords, they would've hosed the kids down with gauss slugs and UAC20s.
>>14861664
Well, they did used them as meat shield and mobile worker pilot until Orga's takeover.
>>14861635
The biggest problem with BT designs is how they're rendered 95% of the time. I believe MWO 'fixed' a great deal of the designs it incorporates. Western mech designs, especially standy-shooty ablative deals like BattleTech, run on greeble. If the greeble sucks, then the entire render is ruined. This is why virtually all BT lineart is hot fucking trash and the mechs look like garbage. They don't know how to draw basic shit like joints and panel lines. There are is a higher proportion of designs that are fundamentally bad, yes, but the majority of BT designs would be perfectly fine with a ver.MWO or ver.Ka render.
>>14861701
I will also say that they probably deserve an artstyle closer to Heavy Metal or even Dragon's Heaven.
>>14861701
No.
They simply told artists to draw random shit they could sell in a box. No designers to speak of. That's a pretty big no-no for anything resembling decent giant robots.
That's why the setting has a bajillion robots and people couldn't name 5 iconic ones. that wouldn't include anime stuff.
Even MW:O hit its peak some time ago and is now still improving them, but with glaring issues like "sameface", reuse of shit to keep up to schedule, etc.
>>14861998
Atlas, Zeus, Commando, Dragon, Catapult plus the Clan designs.
>>14861416
Exo-Squad Season 2 would be nice, too. Releasing part of a show on DVD is bullshit.
>>14862015
Atlas is traced from a Scope-dog, Zeus, Commando, Dragon and Catapult are virtually unheard of by normal people, which goes against the iconicity.
The only iconic Clan shit is Mad Cat and maybe Vulture.
>>14862514
>atlas is a scopedog
'k, whatever makes you feel happy.
>>14862531
He is correct.
There's a picture comparing their lineart floating about. I remember the Scopedog's camera bundle was changed into a set of dishes or so. I'd post it, if I had it on hand.
>>14862554
That was a forced as hell connection that implies Scopedog has a monopoly on dome head.
An Urbanmech has more in common with a Scopedog than an Atlas.
>>14862514
>Atlas is a scopedog
nani
>>14862367
Not gonna happen. With either Battletech or Exosquad. All of the Saban 90s animated stuff is owned by Disney and they can't even do proper releases of their in house tv shows.
>>14862531
>>14862554
>>14862574
>>14862584
The lineart is similar enough to see where the rumor comes from, but if that's a trace then the artist is terrible at tracing. In practice they look significantly different outside of the original lineart. You'd never confuse the Atlas mini for being a Scopedog.
It's pointless to argue about it any depth. People who have made up their minds have made up their minds and you're not going to change them.
>>14862601
Exo-Squad wasn't Saban, it was Universal. Season 1 is already out on DVD, so it's obviously not a rights thing holding up season 2.

>UrbanMech, Raven, Masakari, JagerMech, Puma.
You could name these to a random Mechwarrior fan and they'd just look at you like an idiot.
Everyone knows what TTGL is, everyone knows what Gundam is.
But it's perfectly possible to find people who played all of the games out there and wouldn't be able to name these.
Warhammer, Atlas and Mad Cat... that's where the line ends.
MW4 players know of Vulture because intro, maybe Fafnir.
Marauder is also rather iconic but that, along with Warhammer, crashes at the not-anime rule.
>>14864460
>Everyone knows what TTGL is

>>14868226
What purpose would anything but miniatures scale serve?
Then again BT has the appeal of not needing figurines to represent your units, as long as your marker is both uniquely identifiable and has a way to represent facing.
Oh but way WAY back in the day if I remember right K'Nex had Mechwarrior stuff.
>>14868680
The same purpose as any other mecha plamo - to have a crisp, solid, detailed plamo of it to build and pose and gawk at.
>>14864460
Okay, so if we're using intros as a metric, what about Thor? Kodiak, Catapult, Commando, Zeus, Raven, Centurion, Shadow Cat, Cougar, even the Firefly?
There's plenty of designs from MW that are memorable outside of the handful that are outright cribbed from Macross and other sources, like the Marauder and the Locust.
>>14868063
This, urbie is meme-status among anyone who even knows what BT is.
Isn't it's OP shit due to sheer RNG critical rolls with MGs
>>14868680
It's a Plamo - you build it, you paint it in your favurite colours and then you display it crushing tanks under its feet.

>>14861701
>virtually all BT lineart is hot fucking trash and the mechs look like garbage
Oh god yes. The general layout/concept for them will generally be okay, but that one lot of original drawings made very mech look unbelievably stupid. Virtually any rendition of a Battletech mech besides the original lineart looks perfectly fine. They're all so polygonal, it's less like they were designed by an artists and more by a 3D modeller working with PS1 level hardware, and also he's shit at it.
>>14869794
>artist makes something better
>someone up above him tells him to make it shittier because the deeply entrenched BT fans won't have it any other way
Just fuck my mech up, warrior.
They've been doing stuff to fix that in recent years though.

BattleTech thread on /m/? Cool.
So, I have this question.
Is anything even going to happen or the universe is struck in the dark age era?
>>14868852
>>14868063
The Urbie is about far from OP as you can get. It is slow as molasses on a cold winter's day at 2/3/2, even the Atlas is faster at 3/5. It's armament is ok for a mech its size with an AC 10 and a Small Laser in the standard model. It is meme status because it is bad.
Also there is no crit bonuses for MGs in the tabletop, that was something PGI added to make them worthwhile in MWO.
>>14864407
>Not until some crazy ass invasion beyond pluto begins.
If we're talking about Battletech, I gotta ask, did anyone else spring for that flight jacket for the Harebrained Games kickstarter? It came in a while ago and it's pretty comfy. I didn't think it'd be much aside from just looking cool, but it's doing a very good job of keeping me warm in this fall weather.
>>14872874
I did, and it's pretty neat.
>>14872284
>Is anything even going to happen or the universe is struck in the dark age era?
Allegedly Ilkhan is already written and they're just too chicken to release it.
>something PGI added to make MGs worthwhile
They can be worthwhile, you just didn't bring enough of them.
>>14861238
aside from the flying spin kicks and mechwando, IBO is actually almost exactly like what a mercenary campaign set in battle-tech is like. You can swap out mars for a moderatt sized state in periphery worlds, AV system with VDNI, Gjallarhorn for ComStar, and all the pre-calamity war tech like gundams with Star League era lostech.
Even the little nuances of running a mercenary campaign, like slowly rebuilding your mechs into custom variants by repairing them with battlefield salvage because its cheaper than ordering factory new parts, having to jump the logistical hurdles of keeping a full battalion of mechs and infantry running, being forced into contracts that could potentially be the end of your unit but the payout is bigger than your last 3 jobs combined and you've been bleeding into the red the months.
it only took a me a few episodes to start seeing this show as a battletech campaign instead of a gundam series

>>14874071

>>14874053
Honestly, I like the Reseen Marauder a lot more than the original. I loved the Marauder back in the day, but looking at it now next to the redesign it's actually really weird looking. The legs are too long and attach too far to the back. It makes it look like it's always on the verge of falling on its face. It really shouldn't be able to torso twist in any meaningful way, either. Plus the original arms look like those floaty ropes that they use to mark the lanes in competitive swimming. The off-center cannon instead of swivel was a nice touch, too.
I guess the details didn't really come into it back in the MechWarrior 2 days.
>>14874099

But for the last 300 years, it has been consumed by lawlessness and oppression.
Until a new enemy appeared.
Mysterious invaders known as the Titans.

>>14895366
Yes, it sure was awful when they brought stability to the Chaos March and tried to end centuries of warfare over a vacant throne and petty grudges.Ignore the WMDs, civilian massacres, and false-flag attacks. THE MASTER DID NOTHING WRONG.
WoB is composed of faggots, but they broughtback the LAMs, so it's okay. The first result for 'land to air mech' in Google Images is the YF-19.
>>14902704
I never liked LAMs and they really hold no place in Battletech. Leave them in Macross where they belong.
Plus they universally look horrible except for one fanfiction work, and that's just because it's drawn by Dave "I can make anything look good" White.
>>14873891
Well, that answers OP's question I guess.
Do you need to be familiar with Battletech to play the Mechwarrior games and get what's going on?
>>14903846
Mechwarrior is so standalone it has bred an entire generation of secondaries who don't know jack shit about the tabletop.
And the lore is sometimes inconsistent.
Still, even someone whose only exposure to BT is through MW2 will understand that PISS PARROTS ARE SHIT, CLAN WOLF REPRESENT.
>>14878917
On that matter, did the BDs improve IBO's art/animation much?
>>14903846
Nope. It's honestly better if you don't know jack about BT before playing. Especially the Mechwarrior 4 series

>>14903858
My trothkin.
>>14905017
Because it shits all over established canon. At least Vengeance does. It mostly has to do with Inner Sphere forces having tons of Clan mechs.
>>14905813
By that point in the timelines aren't several clans assimilated into the Inner Sphere?
>>14905853
Yes. Ghost Bear no longer exists.
>>14905853
Yes but even so no unit, let alone a garrison unit, is going to consist of 75% clan tech.
Even the game's intro only shows 2 IS mechs, while having I believe 6 clan omnimechs. It's a little nitpicky of me but come on. If the game takes place in the Inner Sphere use mostly Inner Sphere tech while leaving clan mechs for the bosses and elite enemies.
MW4: Mercs does a better job of getting tech right
>>14861635
Well that and the tabletop game itself is quite fun and tapped into the "Armored core level of customization autism" niche of nerds.
The vidya is what made it famous though
