Is there any information on why Tomino and the composer of Zeta Gundam's music used an obscure american song like 'Better Days are coming' by Neil Sedaka as the opening for their show? I searched for interviews and stuff where Tomino or someone else could have talked about it, but there seem to be no english sources on this topic. Maybe some japanese-speaking anon can help here?

Here's the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bipWWEq26RU

I can imagine that Tomino had the idea of using that melody because he thought the original lyrics fit his show in some way. But that's the best I can come up with.

Japan loved Neil Sedaka. Tomino asked him if he could use the song. Originally they wanted him to perform it for the show, but that fell through and they just used the msuci itself while Tomino wrote new lyrics.

Wow that is such a cool mouth, I bet it talks with a dialogue-o-matic!

Ok, I didn't know that Sedaka was popular in Japan. The mystery is solved now, I guess.

AFAIK all three Zeta songs (the two openings and the ending) were based on Sedaka's music. I think the second opening was based on a piece he never released.

That's true. Here's Sedakas version of the ending.

Quite the obscure topic of MSG franchise. Funny enough I will be watching MSG Zeta soon for the first time and on kissanime both the sub and dub versions of Zeta anime series uses the same Japanese opening song based off of Neil Sedaka's 'Better Days are Coming'

The song in the OP of both Sub/Dub:

I was expecting an English dubbed opening in the dubbed version of Zeta. The YT comments and discussion surrounding why Zeta did not have these Japanese songs for OP/EDs on Blu-ray releases because copyright to the original song it was based on, I guess. Sucks for U.S. physical BD releases/remasters, etc. but Sunrise probably wouldn't pay royalties for the song's usage in the U.S.

This is blowing my mind. I am very glad that instead of studying for my exam tomorrow I came into this thread.

First Zeta opening is a legit jam, the instruments are a little dated but no way you can listen to that and not tap your foot to the beat.

Richie Kotzen's Zeta covers:

Basically sounds like Chris Cornell sings Zeta.

The American dub opening is legitimately better than what the Japanese got. I will stand by this opinion no matter what
