Where did the idea that Inafune created the Mega man series come from and why does it still persist? Even the gaming media keep repeating it. You can't find a single article about Inafune with out them calling him the MM "series creator".
It's a standalone complex, a self sustaining meme without a context of origin.
Why does everyone think every robot master is Wily's?

He does have a habit of slapping his serial numbers on them, not helping those whose creators are unidentified (e.g. the MM6 and MM10 rosters).

For a while, Akira Kitamura never really claimed his being the origin of the IP, since he vanished for years following MM3's completion.

Kitamura left gaming in the late 80's. Inafune became the face of the series in the mid 90's when he was promoted to producer. Then people looked at his credits, which include "character design" in MM1. They then assumed he created all the characters. And from there the myth spread.

The true hero has left, and people needed a substitution. A janitor showed up and claimed to be the true heir of the legendary treasure.
The fanbase was staving for a new hit and worshiped the fake idol like a true god.
Then the storm came, and you know how things ended.

Proper attribution of creation in the early 8-bit era was a total shit show. Every employee except the higher ups was under contractual obligation to not have their real names in the credits to avoid headhunting. We still do not know who actually came up with the original Castlevania games because of stuff like this.
People demand singular creators to create cults of personality out of, and Inafune was and is a good Golden Calf to use. It helps Inafune has not been all that good about denying it, though I recall he has actually qualified his involvement properly, and Capcom needed a faceman for the franchise at the time.
