They're allegedly 60mm.

Which would mean they'd have to be dramatically longer than that and because of the weight of the barrrels they'd need a fairly large electric motor to spin them, plus the 60mm shells would require a fairly large feed system. Plus, given their high rate of fire there would need to be storage for a shit ton of 60mm shells. The RX-78-2s head should be a huge gun turret.

I'm pretty much certain that 60mm is just tomino pulling a number out of his ass, presumably going for a larger than modern number because future=more. Really 20mm would be infinitely more reasonable.

But I don't think it's worth pretending that Tomino knows anything at all about weapons.

When I heard vulcan guns I always assumed that they were 20mm guns, 30mm tops but yeah 60mm for CIWS is completely over the top.

Then again, Gundam is a "real robot" series but yeah, it's still mechs after all, I don't find it that much terrible, suspension of disbelief and all.

This exactly, hell rifle cartridges and actually ship main guns irl is pretty much the complete opposite. 20-30mm guns would be perfectly adequate, even more so if we admit that the 20mm of the future is much more potent that we have now.
