we have lots of "whats your favorite mecha" threads but lets do something a little different. Name one of your favorite MSs and point out some of its flaws.

Byarlant: those little yellow claws. they don't seem all that useful, they aren't large so they can't grapple very well, it can't hold weapons apart from its beam saber, and it only has 2 weapons. Beam Saber and hand Cannon. From the tech stand point those claws are useless.

The little blue parts on the front skirt stand out and don't mesh well with the rest of the design. Backpack gimmick. I still don't see the point in the excalibur swords being mostly physical instead of just high-output beam sabers.

Nobody loves it.

If you think about it the GM really doesn't have any big weaknesses. It's well armed, armored, powered, is maneuverable, and all at a reasonable price. However its entire existence on-screen is to job, and for that it suffers.

I mean, mechanically aside from "it's more expensive than the Zaku II to manufacture" and "needed a model specifically for space use" no flaws are really ever pointed out, but I guess some people may not like the color scheme?

Makes me wonder why hover-suits never got proliferated that far.
>>
>>14835703
It's probably because with time suits either started to jump really, really high or else just straight-up flew anyway. The Dom's niche wouldn't have a place when a suit could theoretically just fly close to the ground.

-not enough screentime
-2nd GN Drive is located in the shield, which is on a swivel. Almost as dumb as putting them on the shoulders.
-New GN sword is kind of bland looking outside of its combined form. Should have had a sword like pic related.
-The fact that the shield is on a swivel attached to its back, reduces its defensive capabilities quite greatly. If anything, it should be docked to the back at all times.
-Sheds armor completely after Quantum burst
-Given its streamlined design, if it were given a PG, the inner frame would not have much room for detail.
-From what is seen with the gn shield created by the sword bits, it appears to only be able to defend attacks coming from one direction.

It doesn't have any melee weapon at all. I kind of wish it got sub-arm with beam saber or at least wrist-beam saber.
Also the finger beam cannon look too fragile. It should have some kind of protecting gauntlet that can transform to melee weapon, like Banshee's claws.
The mobile fortress form should be more useful. I don't know, maybe it got extra i-field or showing other mobile suit riding it like infantries on tank.

>I still don't see the point in the excalibur swords being mostly physical instead of just high-output beam sabers.
I always figured it was for stability. Having a physical frame that you're projecting the beam blade onto means that instead of one tiny electromagnetic field generator in the hilt you've got several running the whole length of the blade. That would make it easier to contain the plasma, allowing you to push the beam saber's output higher with less risk of a blowout. Given that these are "anti-ship swords" meant to cut through thick battleship-grade armor (even if they're mostly not seen used in that capacity), they'd have to be pretty high intensity, so the engineers were probably just worried they couldn't make a stable single-generator design.

The GATx-105 Strike is by all accounts a versatile weapons system in its setting. The ability to adjust its role via Striker packs allows it to flexibly adapt to situations and fill the gaps left by the rest of the GATx series in their intended deployment strategy.

There are, however, two major problems with the design:
1. Power requirements. Due to Neutron Jammer proliferation, mobile suits of the Cosmic Era typically use battery power of some sort. In addition, the G Project mobile suits introduce Phase Shift Armor, a type of electrically reinforced armor that greatly increases resiliency to physical arms at the cost of heightened power consumption. The Strike compounds limited power availability and rapid consumption in combat contexts with yet another source of drain, the Striker packs. While this is partially rectified by each Striker including some sort of external, occasionally hot swappable battery pack, it remains the fact that the Strike consumes its energy at a rate that can easily outpace its supply, hindering its effectiveness on the battlefield.
2. The difficulty of hot swapping Strikers. Once the Strike sorties with its given Striker, it's not that easy for it to equip a new pack in the middle of a fight without retreating to base. While the FX-550 Skygrasper can serve as a sort of Striker ferry, there is no real support for battlefield hot swapping without hangar level logistics.

Take note that these two problems are rectified in the Strike's spiritual successor, the ZGMF-X56s Impulse. The Deuterion beam energy transfer system allows for rapid refill of the Impulse's power, and the Silhouette packs are expressly designed to be hot swapped mid combat, allowing the Impulse not only to fill the gaps like the Strike could, but fill them dynamically as a mission unfolds.

No, they're separate machines. It is a redesigned version of the Dom with different armor plates (blockier armor with better designed seams meant to reduce sand getting in the gaps) and uses different weapons (880mm bazooka instead of 360mm bazooka).

IIRC the armor was never meant to be part of it's common armament, and only there to protect it in the colony in case of an attack, since they weren't confident that anyone on board could effectively pilot it in defense.

Christina sort of half proved them wrong, I guess, but nothing that she did took advantage of it's absurd capabilities in the first place.

Most late UC armor isn't made to take a hit at all anyways as beams tear through it regardless. So almost everything opted for lighter weight and shittier armor in order to optimize speed instead. For those times when it can't dodge that's what the beam shield is for.

And it has built in machine guns in the torso that can shred through most late UC armor.
