Honestly, you can kinda start anywhere. Except Ginga, because that's shit.

I'd recommend starting with either Ultraman or Return of Ultraman for a standard flavour of Showa, and either Gaia, Tiga, or X (if you want something shorter) for Heisei.

Mebius is also a great introduction due to it being an accessible anniversary series (and it's even better if you're familiar with all the references). Definitely one of the best series from Ultraman in general. Give the two main Zero films a try as well.

Ginga S is actually pretty okay. I haven't seen X or Orb though and I don't really care to.

The problem with everything post-Mebius though is that it relies too much on nostalgia and calling back to the older shows, so if you don't have much of a history with the franchise, they're probably not going to do much for you. I wouldn't be surprised if that's at least part of the reason Ultra's popularity has dropped so much in the past decade or so.

How exactly does Ultra transformation work? I mean, it's pretty obvious when the human form -is- the Ultra (e.g. Seven, Mebius), but what about hosts (e.g. Ultraman, Cosmos, Nexus)? Who's in control and what happens to the one who isn't active?
