When I was in Japan, one of the major things I noticed was how fucking amazing everything was aesthetically designed. Everything was simplistic and clean, but so good looking, from the buildings to even the fashion and this flows through to Anime as well I think.

I've heard this stems back to Shintoism and Hokusai, but does anyone have details on why?

Star Wars and Star Trek have always both struck a balance between minimalism and 'realism'.

There was a Trekyards episode with the guy who designed the new Enterprise you see at the end of Beyond, and one of the first things he said was when he looked at the JJprise was "it was just too much, it must have been designed by committee because everything was just way too much". The guy that designed the new Enterprise-A at the end of Beyond also comes from the car industry, designing new cars, so obviously, he has real world design experience.

I think a lot of the problem with these new Hollywood designs is that they come from already established Hollywood design studios where a sort of echo-chamber occurs. That's why all these new designs these days look the same.

The designs from the 1995 movie did a fine job of making the Rangers' suits look more "realistic" without overdesigning them and while keeping the iconic look of the costumes intact.

These new suits I'd have a hard time recognizing as Power Rangers without the colors and even then they still look like some DA "reboot" fanart someone threw together.

A lot of posts in this thread lead me to believe you guys never cared about MMPR and went straight to sentai somehow. How did that happen? I grew up in Hawaii and there was a basic cable Japanese channel that simulcast sentai and rider every year.

I actually watched Dairanger when it aired and got to meet Tetsuo Kurata in person twice when I was a kid. Every time Hiroshi Miyauchi and Kenji Ohba came to Hawaii for a meet and greet from 1991 to 1999 I went as well to the point Ohba actually started recognizing me every year.

Personally I started with MMPR and continue to watch it until Turbo which since it was around 3-4 years later guess I grew out of it (that and Turbo is just no that good) and stopped.
