I knew that ep.17 was gonna hit me hard in the feels, but damn, I still crie evertiem.


I wasn't able to put everything in the MEGA as I had intended because of space. What I'll probably do is delete H&E and upload it in a new location then include a text link in the MEGA so it's all accessible.

Naturally, the best way to start is the original series. Fafner in the Azure ; Dead Aggressor. The issue with this is that Dead Aggressor's first arc prioritizes slow world building and establishing every member of the cast over focused character development.

This can be off putting for certain viewers because they can have difficulty connecting to a population as whole if they don't have one strong character to connect to in which the entire story revolves like Takato in Star Driver for example. The thing is that Fafner at it's core does not have a true main character who every aspect of the story revolves around. Fafner's a story about a community and their struggle, in which you slowly learn and come to care about different members of the community who the majority you only learn a small portion about but you begin caring about everyone as whole.

Eventually after at around the 40% point of the series the show starts kicking into gear because you've absorbed enough about the characters to care and the plot is moving but if you're having difficulty remaining interested you can watch Fafner Right of Left as a last resort, which is a prequel that came out after the first series ended and is a shorter more concise piece that serves to demonstrate the direction, themes, and characterization that the show has. If you don't feel like continuing after Right of Left, then the series is likely not for you.

Heaven and Earth is a transition piece meant to bridge the original series and the sequel series, it's a bit rushed but it establishes important plot threads for Exodus.

Exodus is basically payoff on every work prior but better on every single front in terms of animation, scale, drama, and fights

CGI in mecha doesn't really bother me, I got through Vandread and Sousei no Aquarion. I grabbed the A-E release of Dead Agressor off of nyaa because of subtitle related autism. It sounds pretty interesting and I've seen the series posted about here on occasion.

I do enjoy Fafner a lot, so I advocate for it. I also realize that giving people as much information as I can before can help so they feel less negative during the watch. I'm not going to concede to someone saying the opening is bad anymore because I don't agree with that. Doing so would be dishonest to myself. Certainly it could be better, as the changes Tow makes in the manga adaptation ARE net positives but for all the times I've watched the series, there's just so much good stuff in the opening episodes that are thematically important and great in hindsight.

I don't feel it's a major reaction. I feel it's a simple adaptation to their complaints since Fafner's early structure is atypical. It's not front loaded like many media today tend to do to grab attention.

It's a far more gradual escalation built on slow burn. It's different and I understand how being told "it gets better half way in" doesn't make the series sound good and undersells the importance of those early episodes.

Those early episodes are integral to Soushi, Fumihiko, Maya, Koyo, and Sakura's character arcs. How desperate a battle against a new type of Festum is. Just how close to the edge of destruction Tatsumiya always walked to explain why certain choices were made.

I just can't see the entire opening arc as "bad" anymore. It's different.

I watch Agents of Shield. AoS throws the gear into maximum hype right around the start of the Winter Soldier tie in event. Up until now it was a kinda unambitious show about agents doing random weekly mission shit and could've ended up being a colossal failure for the MCU broadcast serials because of how WOW IT'S FUCKING NOTHING that early chunk feels.

You could look at the beginning under a different light, how Ward's hypercompetence as an agent feeds into the reveal that he's part of the HYDRA goons and has been neck deep in double agent chicanery.

Or you could call the production team's bluff and just say that yes, it was kinda a weak start, it's great they made something enjoyable without having to trash everything and start from scratch, but it doesn't change that the start was really weak and not a good representative of the rest of the show and no amount of hype is going to retroactively make those early episodes all part of the intended plan for production.

Even with the structure of the manga, Tow doesn't drastically change the early story at all. All he does is add a bit more character moments, the meat and potatoes of the story is the same.

I don't think I've seen this pointed out before, but I noticed re-watching some episodes that the Accelerators can be used to power up non-SDP attacks. Reo activates his before using the Raven Sword a couple of times. They do mention that the Fafners are now running off of the Mir Core as a direct power source now (which makes me wonder what their original generator was) so maybe the Accelerator does some overclocked Mir resonance thing to power up the units and that gives them more physical power/speed too. I kind of wish we had a clearer idea of how they work than red stuff = more power.

Also makes me wonder if Maya's thing in the last two episodes was actual a SDP ability and not just something related to overclocking the targeting systems. I mean it was very likely intended to be her SDP, but Orihime didn't do her introduction thing and it seems really dull in comparison to all the others.

I think the accelerators are supposed to be all-purpose boosts, the SDP boost is just highlighted since that's a new important feature. But I'm pretty sure it was stated the Einherjar models are all around higher-performance.

And I don't know, I think heightened awareness seems like enough of a Festum-ish ability to fit the bill. But yeah definitely not as flashy.

Because that's storytelling and the narrative tradition.

Things take from things and maybe improve, maybe not, or maybe they use similar beats because they're familiar and accessible and help to create a certain story.

Would you say that Fafner is identical to another mecha anime? No, not even remakes are identical.

Whether or not it works for you or not is one thing, but Fafner's similarities to other things is hard t ignore, but to think that Muv-Luv is the first story to do what it did either is silly too.

In short there is really nothing intrinsically good about originality or unoriginality. What matters is the execution.
I suppose there's some ethics concerns and monetary considerations for plagiarism, but if a work is good, it's good, regardless of who thought it up. Of course, it's better if the creator gets credit.

The major thematic difference between Fafner and a lot of the shows it's compared to is that ultimately, Fafner is a show that embraces optimism and hope.

Most of these mecha shows that Fafner is compared to never have such a definite cord towards that message.

In this way Fafner is probably a more true successor to Ideon's message than Evangelion, since ultimately with EoE Anno let his personal feelings ultimately stain the message that he tried to convey with the series

I know no one gives a fuck or remembers and I should kill self. But I live reactioned my experience with the first season, OVA, and movie back in March. Was a blast and y'all had a good time while also providing great discussion. I went from laughing at how cliche and EVA rip-off the show was to downright adoring it. In my top anime forever list. Between school and jobs I got so busy I never watched Fafner Exodus though! Now though in the middle of October I decided to fire it up on a drunken lark.


I nearly fucking cried seeing the TV stations, seeing everyone years later living their lives. Then that fucking battle theme came on and ALVIS started calling out information. It was so goddamn great I'm actually happy I took a huge break, it sort of fits. I'm foggy on some stuff due to time but loving whenever I remember a character or their traits. The story's fucking awesome and I can't believe an awesome series like that got another full season. The CG is BALLS OUT INCREDIBLE for a full running mecha show. Soushi is forever best boy, dat long hair. Dat megane. Dat slight improvement but still terrible autism. I swear to fuck, they just said the Mir changed the Fafners, so if Soushi gets to pilot he better go full chuuni sperg. Anyway, there might be more? I had no idea, thought Exodus was the swansong! God damn if this series takes years again it'll be worth it. I just wanna say thanks for pushing me to keep going and making my first time with Fafner unforgettable. And finally

Just a fun tidbit, the Fafner Cores--not to be confused with a Core-type Festum or a Mir Core that the Azazel types manifest from--are in fact, Festum. The Fafners exist as a sort of control system for them as well as an overclocker. The problem is when you dial the power up, the Festum inside the Fafner takes its due.
The Salvator Models crank the Core up to HUUUUGGEEEE outputs.
Furthermore when a Festum, like Idun or Misao, pilots a Fafner they can basically run at full power with impunity.

In Kouyou's case, he turned himself into Vier's core because he's a pimp or something.

I've always wondered how much he can actually do as just a core. It was made pretty explicit in HaE that he transformed himself into just a core, and he needed the island's power to get his body back in Exodus, so it's not like he could just transform back.

I prefer the computer processor approach with the pilot as the "power source".

So Zero is overclocked to high hell and back ALL the time, and the batteries get drained real fast.

Titan has an external power source that's also a power conduit for another Titan and they share the burden, but it's still running hot at like all times.

Nothungs basically forgo the overclocking entirely unless the pilot themselves activates it.

Einherjars share the powering across all the linked units and the Gordian Crystals so there's a higher threshold, but if a terminal burns too hot, its power source gets fried.

Salvators are like miniaturized Zeros, but with tons and tons of refinements to minimize the strain on the power source.

One thing I like to look at is how all the D-Island pilots have Festum essence in themselves so they can power the Fafners, but since they aren't fully Festum, they're still susceptible to Assimilation Phenomena.

Salvators piloted by Festum create this kinda power loop and thus immune to the Assimilation Phenomena.

That makes me wonder, what would a Fafner with a core of something like a Leviathan-type do to another Festum that tried to pilot it.

So far the weakest Festum to pilot a Fafner was a Sphinx-type, so it makes me curious because we've seen Fafners nom external Festum (Seri, Soushi, Kazuki).

Arguably ones that are part of Tatsumiya's Mir like Kazuki might not, since that's where the Fafner cores come from, but he might still be human enough to need a "reset" like Soushi every so often. That doesn't help Kurusu either, for instance.

Speaking of, I always wondered what Soushi's attached Mir is supposed to be, or if he needed one. It's stated that Master-Types can survive without one, so maybe that's all it is. Since his mind is all that was left after DA, presumably that's what his core is anyway.

They were all constructed at the same time. It was development order, not order of appearance.

The 3 Alvis were clearly in contact with each other when brought up, and they only lost contact with the other two when they encountered Nuns.

They literally even mention how other countries made attempts to copy Alvis in the episode where we encounter the empty island. That line makes no sense if it wasn't a foreign island, AND the aesthetic senses of that island were clearly not Japanese when part of the entire point of the Alvis plan was to preserve Japanese culture.

Besides, the show's screens have spelled plenty of things inaccurately. Like Crawler is Clawler on at least one screen (I know nips and their L's, but the voice cast hasn't really had much problem with intonation on engrish).

On the other hand, there's this. As much as the series is mostly consistent, it's pretty clear the lore wasn't completely rock-solid defined in DA, especially before Tow took over. Hell, the idea that the Seto Inland Sea Mir was divided between three islands didn't even exist until the official Exodus timeline. Retcons happen.

Unless Horai somehow becomes relevant in a future installment, after barely more than a mention in Exodus, I don't have any reason to think it wasn't the DA island. It's stated that Horai "vanished" too, which even the Japanese wiki seems to treat as a roundabout way to say it was destroyed.

Small counterpoint for thought, Tatsumiyajima was called API-1, by the NUNs in DA, even though it was the third they had encountered. I think it's safe to assume the original 3 ALVISes were.


The only thing that makes me strohgly think the second ALVIS we encounter in the show could be /the second ALVIS/ is because of that island's core-type chilling out in the Coagula. Also, he says

I still think it's a little strange that "the island in DA"s core looks so similar to the Prometheus one in Exodus. Even ignoring that, we know Tsubaki was basically an accident, becoming the core saved her life. But did the other two islands just doom random young boys to life in a tube?

The Prometheus core was attached enough to his island's people to want revenge though, so it must have been somehow mutual. Meanwhile the poor other island boy was presumably just eaten to provide Idun with that form.
