Is this still the best game as far as conveying a somewhat "realistic" mecha handling goes?
Is there no other game where i can struggle to control each individual arm and finger of my mech while enemy fire rains down and i have to consider whether it's time to abandon the machine to live another day or face the prospect of turning into scrap with it?

The Original Steel Battalion with the full fledged 40-button and pedal set up is one of the most intense mecha simulators around. Literally everything as small at the cleaning of your visor to as big as having to actually boot up your unit manually after getting hit with an EMP.

Also worth noting, if you fail to eject after your unit has taken critical damage in a battle or by falling into a river or pit of flames, your save file and combat record is deleted forever. Everything you have done, unit collection, difficulty unlocks and other functions unlocked from beating higher difficulties are gone and you will have to recollect them. Its basically the mecha version of Dark Souls, only with total perma death alongside it.

Didn't know it was THAT detailed. Buying an old xbox next then.

Also, i remember seeing someone posting a webm of controlling a (white?) mecha arm from cockpit or head view, with detailed movements that went all the way to fingers. I think it was something still in development and other posters were pessimistic about it ever being released.

I've wanted to try this game since I learned about it years ago. What MS did with that sequel relesed for the 360 was bullshit.
>>
>>14793707
Agreed, the concept itself was really damn neat, but integrating the kinect interface was the way to ruin the entire experience. They needed that game to run on the old or maybe a newly revised version of the Steel Battalion Controller.
>>
>>14793691
Before you go and grab that Xbox for it, understand exactly what you are buying here. Steel Battalion itself can fetch from around 20 to 50 bucks depending on the source you are getting it from. The controller alone can run you from 150$ (If you get lucky enough in a bid or have a reasonable seller) to over 500$ (Generally what a lot of the original Green button models go for)

As much as I love the game, I would not go over 150$ for paying for the controller. If you are lucky, you might find a seller with the game bundled as well.

[Note: Do not buy Line of Contact, it's an online on sequel that's basically a brick now due to Xbox live going down for the original Xbox. It has no single player to speak of and can only do System Linking]

Check out the Remote Control Dandy games, they're a really similar deal by the same developer.

Goddammit I've never been able to play RAD, want to so badly.

Even tried to emulate it but it was unplayable in that state

>>14794002
There's also Choshoujuu Mecha MG for the Nintendo DS, also from the same developer.

I still have my blue button controller and the game, but I sold my xbox like a moron. Game was hard as fuck and I was awful at it but I loved it.

Games rather tough until you get the controls down and get a 2nd generation VT. Once you get those things down pat, it's a rather relaxing experience...until you get past veteran mode.

Desperado mode is going to give you a good kick in the ass without a 3rd generation Rail Gun equipped VT like the Quasar or Juggernaut. It's possible with the M1 Prominence series, but it's going to be one hell of a ride.

Magnum Force is where the buck stops for most people. Projectiles are coming so fast that you need to stay attentive 100% of the time to not get downed by a simple installation turret or a MP-Vizsh. With the 3rd generations its possible, but its a trial to be sure.

Armaggedon is a whole diffrent ballpark from every other difficulty though. Unless you have the Devils luck or newtype-esc reflexes, you will be shot down by even the smallest threat. Units that took one rail gun shot take up to three now, and the firing rate for cannons has been doubled from Magnum Force, and missiles can not be knocked off track even with chaff at close range. It's a badge of honor to manage to come out of that difficulty.

MOTHERFUCKING VAVEL THE OG MEGANITE
>>
>>14791770
Why did the game seem setup so that all three player characters could have been active at once with each of them getting one of the meganites and each of them getting their own of the love interests?

you forget to mention that most dvd-rs will shit up the laser, the taiyo yuden or whatever sony ones are the high quality ones so i guess buy sony ones and hope you get it

I used Verbatim for years and the laser still works. But an HDD is better anyway.

No other game has ever filled me with as much joy as the first time I punched one of those robots and it went tumbling through a city block.

It's a feeling no other game since has really captured.

This is my biggest gripe with RAD: Every enemy, except the Kaiju-ish one, isn't that inspired.

Every other Sandlot robot game has better enemies: Remote Control Dandy/RCD SF's got giant robots with unique gimmicks, Tetsujin 28's robots are varied and faithful to the manga and even Choushuu Mecha MG's enemies are slightly varied, albeit unplayable.
>>
>>14808087
They probably ran out of ideas by the point they got to RAD, although even then EDF gets room for new things (goddamn cyborg frogs).
>>
>>14794045
Is your computer weak? Runs great emulated.

>>14802847
It does? Even when playing as the girl the story seems to get all the characters to the same love interests. Neither poor girl or punk dude make suitable mates and it's only natural for the female protag to be gay.

>>14808087
It would have been less of an issue if the missions themselves were less repetitive. As much as I love the game, for the middle portion you're basically doing the same shit since the enemies are so similar (oh no, this one has DRILL HANDS) and the objectives aren't different enough to make them feel unique.
>find robot
>trash robot because the game is easy once you get the controls
>rinse
>repeat

>>14793989
If Kinect wasn't shit it wouldn't be a terrible idea. I think a VR mech game is in the future.
>>
>>14810955
That's the worst part about it, everything looks great and if Kinect did what it was advertised to do, it could have surpassed even the original.
