Chaotic Century/Guardian Force got pretty grim sometimes too. Kid protagonist aside. I remember a fair amount of scenes where soldiers are slaughtered by the Death Saurer.

I feel like the bizarre "war is a fun adventure" thing is part of the charm of Zoids. It seems jarring to an adult, but it pushes pretty much every button a 12-year old boy has. It's got as much in common with Pokemon as it does with Gundam, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I can't think of any child pilots in Fuzors, but that is almost certainly because I don't like thinking about Fuzors.
It's implied at one point that children sometimes pilot Zoids for labor purposes in Genesis, but not for battle. There are two child pilots, one because she's a deposed princess who is trying to kill all of the people involved in getting her off the throne, and the other because he's literally the only pilot in the world his Zoid will accept. And he's fucking terrible as a pilot until he gets a tutor. There are technically other child pilots but they don't countbecause they're dead humans who had their souls removed and stuck inside machines and forced to work for Digald.

It was grim, but it wasn't GRIMDARK. CC was just a traveling story mixed with a war story in the background. Guardian Force was just dealing with the fallout from that war.
Zoids Genesis had the entire world get fucked over into a post-apocalyptic setting where the only Zoids that actually breed are either genetic mutants or really weak insects that survived the extinction event, an insane warlord of tremendous power is on the march crushing everyone before him, and a bunch of super-advanced aliens are lording over everyone laughing at their deaths.

While the Sky People are certainly arrogant fucks for the greater part of the series, that's a bit extraordinarily far. Also they're not aliens.
The only one who can be said to do that also is the "insane warlord of tremendous power". Felme really just doesn't give a shit about anything, most of the ones in the city in the sky are supplying both sides but act more like the Lanplate citizens than anything else (until late in the show where they just outright join the good guysbecause everything important about them got destroyed), there's very heavy implications that a few neutral people actually on the surface got killed by said insane warlord (Like the guy Ruuji was looking for early on), and of courseRonis a good guy in every way.

Wheras Jiin is literally just a giant collosal asshole who does things because he's a dick, and he succeeds because he figured out how to get past the piloting issueby killing people and stuffing their souls into machines!And then because he's a horrible dick his entire army rebelled against him, including his former closest friend (and eventually Felme even because she wanted a shota-D), and he was killed by a piece of lost tech that turned out to be ludicrous OP bullshit hax even more than everyone thought it was.

That's what happens when you take a machine designed to be used as a nimble sniper and turn it into a fucking walking artillery piece, destroying the entire balance of the unit by doing so.
I think there were a few fights where she did something of note, but since she also had that stupid tendency to burn through her entire ammo supply in 20 or so seconds it never was that much.
