I had no problem with that. A lot of mecha directors like to jam weird shit in their shows. Like with king gainer for example and the tran Siberian rail way as well as also being loosely related to a French novel. Its weird but can be interesting.

I finally started watching this show a couple months back. I was actually enjoying it after a while. It was melodramatic as fuck, but it had a few moments and felt like it was getting better as it went on. Then the part where they travelled to the future and hung out with the enemies for as while, and the whole thing began to reek so hard of Destiny-tier piousness and completely uncharacteristic bullshit that I couldn't force myself to keep going.

I don't normally agree with the opinion that any given show is irredeemable shit. There's almost always some level of enjoyment to be had out of even the most brutal of trainwrecks. But Cross Ange is literally the only show to truly make me mad over having wasted the time watching it as much as I did.

The premise is that in the future the Earth Federation(forgot what they're called) are fighting some kind of Space China empire, and the most powerful weapons are super agile mechs called STRAINs. But to pilot a STRAIN the machine has to coordinate with a clone brain of the pilot, and without the clone brain(which people carry around in a companion cube), you can't do shit.

The main girl loses her clone brain in some way I forgot but finds that the doll is some kind of super advanced construct is able to help coordinate the mech so she can still pilot a STRAIN.

I forgot a lot because I saw the show so long ago and it was honestly really average although it had its good points. It's an alright thing to marathon and just waste a day. It's not bad.

Her clone brain (MIMIC) is destroyed when the white haired dude in OPs image attacks her training complex in the first episode.

The doll was a very, very old MIMIC unit whose long-dead owner presumably fitted into a doll for safe keeping (or just because they liked dolls. I dunno). Nobody is supposed to be able to synchronize with any MIMIC other than their own, but for (at first) unknown reasons, the protagonist is able to connect with this ancient MIMIC so that she can pilot again.

That's pretty much STRAIN in a nutshell. The universe it builds is pretty good, and the mechanical designs are great. Hell, even the plot isn't terrible at all. But not one of the characters felt like a real person, even by anime standards, so it was hard to get invested in what was going on.

You get neither. The women are titty monsters meant for rape fantasies, I have no problem with oversexualized characters but literally every female has a scene where the MC sexually assaulted them and it's always just really random/awkward. The MC is unlikeable pretty much in any way with being a particularly boring edgelord, and I hate how his face is draw. The humor is shit And crude, the main joke is "dude these penguins have boners! xD" for several episodes. And the mech is one of the single worst designs of any mech.

I genuinely think there is no reason to watch this show, it's one of the worst ones in recent years.

Simoun is easy to get since it was Girls und Panzer in the sky before there was Girls und Panzer. The weirdness kicks in when the TV adaptation goes grimdark, the story ends in complete bureaucratic betrayal and sellouts, the aces of the story end their careers without any notable accomplishments to their names, and the ending implies that many of the pilots will go on to fight for their new patron nations against each other and inevitably killing each other in wars they don't believe in.
