I totally remember that, myself I think it was total propaganda that Mr. Newton told to his soldiers.
Certainly because it was easier to explain and more credible for his people to tell them it was a powerful enemy Guymelef going to be mass-produced...

...than a uncontrolled variable in his Fate-manipulating equation, you don't go telling everybody you can manipulate fate (and people).
In fact I can only imagine the look of his scientist when they were told of "that plan to separate the dragon from the seer".
"FOLKEN WILL DO WHAT TO MANIPULATE WHAT ?"

no.

I liked that the magic was pretty low-key for most of the show. The closest thing Van got to a power-up was learning to sense hidden enemies, and that jet form near the end. Shooting Voltekkas would have been overkill.
>>
>>14771035
meanwhile in the manga (you know, the one where the chick was actually attractive), the only thing it even had was shooting lazors out of it's wrists.

escaflowne seems to be one of those things whose portrayal varies wildly between versions.

Should I watch Magic Knight Rayearth or Escaflowne first /m/? I'll end up watching both eventually.
>>
>>14772439
Why not watch both at the same time, you curmudgeon? They're both fantastic and well worth it. Also the Escaflowne manga is great, too. I can only speak for the shonen version, though.

If you want something more typical of mahou shoujo watch Rayearth. If not quite, Escaflowne.
>>
>>14763384
That's because Escaflowne doesn't have big shoulder lasers. At one point Sir Isaac Newton saw a potential future featuring an army of Escaflownes with shoulder lasers, but that doesn't mean there's an army of Escaflownes either.
>>
>>14772439
Escaflowne, Rayearth is CLAMP trash and is only liked by Obari fans that'll eat up anything involved with him and I say that as a fan of his works.
>>
The amount of detail put into the art, cultures and world of Escaflowne is something that's sorely missed in today's anime. There's so much you can miss in one or two viewings. Also Basram >>>>> Zaibach

>>14767651
Yep, I remember that. I remember rewatching it and being surprised how little it was played.

I have to say that trailers was surprisingly good, even respectful of the creator (naming them all despite the smaller fanbase in the US)

>>14775534
I can't say I found the movie really good, there wasn't really a point in reusing the licenses if it was to change everything. It lost every mech battle except one and replaced some by really subpar "magic" battle.

At least the animation was good but you would expect that of any movie.

Gotta admit, they make Outlaw Star sound more EPIC than it actually is.

Cowboy bebop is.... slightly less than what it is, but it's visual alone would sell it.

And it remind me that I SHOULD watch Blue Submarine n° 6
>>
>>14776993
Blue Sub is cool but lemme tell you 20 years has done weird things to the look of the show.

It hasn't aged badly per se, it just ends up cultivating an unmistakable look for itself thanks to Gonzo being an early adopter of CGI and digital coloring, on top of being, well, Gonzo.

Old Gonzo was the craziest.
>>
>>14771035

I don't recall it having a jet form, though it's been years since I saw it. Got any pics?
>>
>>14777023
I think you don't need to warn people about how a show looks when you're in an Escaflowne thread
>>
>>14777115
I dunno, the board has a major anti-CGI sentiment and Gonzo is notorious for embracing the stuff in its infancy.

Plus by all means it's noticeably dated in places and not exactly Gonzo's peak performance (contrast with Yukikaze and you'll see what I mean), it was very much a learning experience for them which results in some weird shit at times.
>>
>>14776993

Why wouldn't he need to ? I don't think Escaflowne used CGI for more than special effect (and damn well with it)

>>14777161
Nowadays the anti-CGI is just troll faking it, we don't even need to restart it here.
Cowboy Bebop or Macross Plus, some of the best show of what we call "it was better before" profited from digital.

Look at me rambling, I should be saying that Yukikaze was awesome EVEN for a movie.

Escaflowne is 26 episodes of great animation and surprisingly on point storytelling when you consider Kawamori was even involved in it.
Rayearth has that made for TV quality to it, some episodes are good some are boring, and first season is not even mecha anyway.
>>
>>14777230
>when you consider Kawamori was even involved in it.
In fairness, the production went through so many hands and delays that Kawamori probably went "fuck it, Akane, you go take the reins".
>>
>>14777217
>profited from digital
Which doesn't mean they used 3D models that clashed horribly with the animation and the 2D backgrounds like modern Macross, Kuromukuro and other sub-par shit does.
Escaflowne used it for the coloring of the dragon in the first episode and some VFX, not to animate the guymelefs thank god.
Macross Plus used it for the trippy idol stuff and for good reason, it was supposed to be trippy and offputting.
>is just troll faking it
Using 3D for the models in a 2D environment will ALWAYS look worse than 2D, deal with it.
Or you're free to show me any Japanese 3D production, Movie or OVA that looks as good as DYRL, Escaflowne, Akira, EoE, Giant Robo or Gunbuster.
So far only videogame cutscenes come close, and that's because they take a shitton of time to make and cost like several anime series.

That said, a full 3D anime with 3D background can look stunning, the new GANTZ movie comes to mind, but please let's not say that Sidonia or such shit is acceptable.

I have to agree. It was only recently that I finally finished watching Outlaw Star, so maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I saw it all back then, but I wasn't all that impressed. It didn't start to get really exciting until it was almost over. I expected space adventure, and most of the time they were just chilling on one planet doing nothing.
>>
>>14772439
Escaflowne is trash carried by good mecha designs, fights and music, the plot you might as well ignore and just skip every part where characters are actually talking.

You're probably one of those people who dislike Dilandau's characterization in it. I felt the manga culminated more completely than the series did. Also Newton was far more fleshed out in the manga.

Series obviously.

More original story (despite budget cut and less episode)
More mech battle (I don't mind the movie bio-mech but it doesn't fit the design as much)
Hitomi being more important than a support character do people even realize that it's Van who would be the secondary character ?
More awesome soundtrack

Can't say the movie version was interesting, no mecha, only magic.
I don't even remember the plot.
>>
>>14781679
The series overall was way better. The movie was just edgy and hard to watch....not to mention there was only really one "mech" fight, which while nice to look at didn't make up for how boring the rest of the movie was.

The thing I hated about both was the fucking "I love you and I'll never forget you bye" ending. Hitomi spent so much fucking time on Gaea she couldn't just be happy and stay with him? This shit pissed me off the most, no matter how good the terms were they left on. Not to mention retiring Escaflowne again.
>>
>>14788536

The director has a serious boner for that ending, since Heat Guy J ended the exact same way for absolutely no good goddamn reason

To be fair, the ending of the movie is a trope that exist since forever "we shall part way and never meet again, but I'll always remember you", and not that much different from the series.
if I had the link to another goddamn world with non-human life, I would contact the UN & scientist and organize FIRST CONTACT

Am I the only one to think Van looked badass in the movie ?
It don't salvage it but you can imagine that guy becoming king later.
