The good part of ZZ is actually better than Zeta, its just that no one sees that part because the first 30 episodes are all just pointless slapstick. Watch a few episodes, then if you can't handle it, skip to episode 30, then if you still don't like it, just skip it entirely. Its the least essential UC series by far, but its still good.

ZZ is totally skippable.

CCA is only a couple of hours long so you can watch it one sitting.

Watch NGE if you're still burnt out on Gundam. Be warned though that there's a big "fuck you" at the end of the series which leaves a bad taste in your mouth for most people.

I don't think its fair to equate running out of budget to them saying, "fuck you." They did what they could with what they had and then after that they gave us one of the greatest anime movies ever made.
