Kouta's character is very much in the same vein as Godai, Kenzaki and Eiji. He's willing to do literally ANYTHING to protect those around him in order to let them have a normal life, and takes all this shit onto himself. He starts off treating it all as kind of a joke, but during the whole series, he's the only one who keeps the motivation of "I just want everything to be normal again" rather than being corrupted by power.

the difference is that Kouta doesn't do much to move himself forward. He's a bit like Takeru in that unless there was someone straight up holding his hand, nothing more than the bare minimum would get done. That turned me off his character.

There were two main problems. One wasn't really fault of the staff, but the other one was.

1-The Micchy plotline and Kouta's willingness to forgive him. It's clear that people saw it in a very different light from the one intended by the show (seeing it all motivated by his feelings for Mai, even though that was never mentioned as the reason for his fall in the show, just for his stupidity at the end, believing Ryoma about Kouta being willing to sacrifice her). The main issue is that if you see Micchy as doing it all to get rid of Kouta and get Mai, then he's basically destroying humanity to get rid of a romantic rival, but if you see it like the show intended it to be seen, he just believed that there was no winning against Helheim/Overlords and was attempting to save humanity in an extremely misguided way (which is why he boasts about his plan saving more people than Yggdrazil's). Forgiving the later makes much more sense than the former.

2-Sagara giving Kouta his power ups, and being intended by the narrative to be seen as a neutral force, even though most viewers saw him as a villain. This one I still don't get. Every other similar force or character in Urobuchi's shows always was portrayed negatively, like Kyubei or the Sybil system, but just because Sagara had some charisma they expected people to see him as true neutral?

He moved onto Aesir soon after, still a male, and was the third subber for Fourze. They stopped during Wizard, but when Gaim came up they announced they were gonna do it first, as Heat didn't show much interest at the time. O-T went on to say as a whole: "We don't want another Fourze situation where people get confused as to what to watch, so we'll just back off on this one and do something else."

The fight between Kouta and Kaito is the battle that decides the fate of the world. In the original timeline, Kouta didn't get a single help from Sagara and managed to kill Kaito all the same.
Mai wanting to save Kaito and Zawame, tried to hinder Kouta's progress and stop their fight. Since the fate of the world rests on their fight, there has to be an outcome, no matter what. Sagara is the force that ensures that, and it translates to helping Kouta with upgrades.

Sagara is like a natural force like an earthquake, it can't be stopped, it's "fated". How is he not true neutral?

Read it again. The problem is not with the narrative, it's with the fact that character type is strongly associated with villainy. It's like being suspicious when an obvious secondary rider immediately starts off being nice to the main rider. If you've watched more than one show, you'd pretty much be counting down the episodes until he turned antagonistic. It's not the writers' fault so much, it's just that KR is formulaic and people expect it to conform to that formula.

I'm like 25 episodes in and i feel like nothing has happened.
I didn't mind that in Fourze & OOO cause i felt the characters were really charming and it kept me interested.
But in Den-O I just can't stand half the characters.
I like Momotaros, Deneb, the Owner, and Naomi but thats about it.
Ryotaro is too spineless and boring, and he hasn't improved himself yet.
Urataros and Kintaros might as well not exist because they never do anything.
Ryutaros is only good while dancing, otherwise I find him grating as hell.
And every other character is just kinda There.
I enjoy the humor but I just think the show is kinda bland.
