Having read through all of Appleseed and GITS last night, I actually think I prefer Appleseed. Just something about it seems to click.

It's one of the big ironies I suppose that despite you having this huge world to explore, GITS is the one that got all the series. GITS is great too, don't get me wrong, but it works better as the short series you see in the comic. 1.5 is also decent. 2.0 is meh. And the broader characters do also help; I do want to see more of Hitomi's home life escapades with Artemis and her children.

It's actually quite amazing to think of just how little work Shirow actually put out before he stopped. Well, it's not a little work because you can just see how dense and detailed his stuff is compared to plenty of artists of the time, but it's rather depressing to see all his main stuff on the shelf, dwarved by pretty much everything else on there.

I try watching it every now and then and every time it still feels really dull, especially when you compare it to the movie and to the manga. Even Arise, in spite of its debatable character designs, has more polish to it.

SAC is more of a thing for gun nuts who love watching operators operate in operations. So I'd say it's at least partially directed towards teens.

If the last time you watched it was in your teenage years you'll probably get more from it yeah.
Or at the very least you'll get that there actually isn't much to get from it, because none of its philosophy is seriously applicable to the real world, but makes sense in the context of the story.

I think the best way to watch the movie is to place it in the context of every other goth/horror/cyberpunk/noir seinen stuff that came out before and after (plus the manga). It really puts it into perspective and a lot of its ambiguous bits that seem like indecipherable riddles at first sight become a lot less puzzling when you have that background.
