What is the best Leiji Matsumoto to start: Galaxy Express, Yamato or Harlock?
>>
>>14690271
999 tv
first Captain Harlock show
first Yamato tv series

all are acceptable, but 999 is a thing you watch for a long time, it's like original Trek or TNG, they're episodic type things that make a long journey, not a single plot you rush through that's also basically the message of the work
>>
GE999 movie. The TV series is shit.
Movie > Manga > TV
>>
>>14690284
It's not shit you just have to know what you're in for. The anon explained it above you though. If you want the Galaxy Express 999 story that you can watch in one sittings watch the manga.

I would say Queen Emeraldas, it's short, and the lack of an ending isn't problematic due to the lack of an overall plot in the serie.
>>
>>14690271

Yamato is not Matsumoto, just saying.

Unless you think Yoshikazu Yasuhiko created Gundam.
>>
>>14690271
Definitely not the manga as Matsumoto can't draw
>>
So there isn't an Guide image for Leiji's work, I've started reading th Harlock manga, but I'm not even sure how many volumes there are.
>>
>>14691503
>So there isn't an Guide image for Leiji's work, I've started reading th Harlock manga, but I'm not even sure how many volumes there are.
That's because Matsumoto is a terrible manga artist. You're better off sticking to the anime productions, where he actually put time and effort in.
>>
>>14691517
>he

That's funny. He barely did anything in those. Maybe that's why they're decent.

Okay, OP, I'm gonna help you out.

The 'Leijiverse' may look daunting, but it really isn't. Most of them are self contained stories that have some cameos of characters from his other works. Most of them take place in different continuities. That are some exceptions, however.

The shitposter may lead you to believe that Leiji had very little involvement with the production of Yamato but he was actually very heavily involved. From the spaceship designs, the character designs, and story ideas Leiji was there. The animators weren't able to properly draw his female characters so Leiji himself would even chime in to help sometimes. You can read up on his involvement here: http://ourstarblazers.com/vault/302/

Now for actual suggestions on what to watch first:

- Captain Harlock (1978)
- Arcadia of My Youth (Alternative timeline)
- Endless Orbit SSX (Sequel to Arcadia of My Youth)
- Galaxy Express 999
- Queen Millennia (Movie)

The Galaxy Express timeline is something like this:
Queen Millennia > Maetel Legend > Space Symphony Maetel > Galaxy Express/Galaxy Express Movie > Sayonara Galaxy Express > Galaxy Express Eternal Fantasy

There's also the Galaxy Railways series which explores other trains part of the Galaxy Railways. The first season is pretty good but the second one I ended up dropping. The GE999 crossover OVA is pretty decent.

For manga, you should pick up the newly released Queen Emeraldas manga. It's gorgeous and is a fun introduction to the titular character. The Captain Harlock manga is superior to the anime but is sadly unfinished. The anime kind of gives it an ending, though. Happy Scans plans on doing the Yamato manga along with Queen Millennia which should be quite good.

>It's gorgeous

Maybe the hardcover.

>The Captain Harlock manga is superior to the anime

Please don't lie to yourself. It's sad.

>>

>>14692366
Sorry for pointing out of the truth. Matsumoto lacks all the basic skills to make a good manga.

He didn't improve all this time either while every other other author of his era like Ishinomori and Tezuka actually did improve over the years.

They're fucking dead, and yet their art was still better at their time of death than Matsumoto's.
>>
>>14693643
Not to mention their writing. Drawing pretty girls is barely 1/10 of the step of what makes a manga good.
>>
>>14690356

I'm glad they remastered this for Blu-Ray, as it's one of my favorite concept albums made into a movie.

But this BARELY is Matsumoto and you know it. The studio and him were given a little leeway, but for the most part I'm pretty sure Guy and Thomas came up with the story.
>>
>>14693643
>>14693646

You forgot the mention about his big fat ego. He believes himself to be such a genius he opened a lawsuit against some japanese musician accusing him of plagiarism of a really generic piece of dialogue from his manga. Of course, as it happened before with the Yamato franchise, he lost it:

>Complain about ego while sucking Tezuka's dick

Peak irony considering Tezuka was a jealous baby who would constantly step on other artists who were better than him.

>>14695194
Because he's an autistic spic who can't handle that Leiji is one of the most famous sci-fi creators in Japan. Upon seeing a thread for Leiji his first instinct is the post a shitpost and if that's ignored he'll continue to shitpost until he gets a response.

Thankfully, to his despair, Queen Emeraldas has been selling better than expected and we'll probably see more of his works brought over while he cries about Ishinomori.
>>
>>14695229
>Peak irony considering Tezuka was a jealous baby who would constantly step on other artists who were better than him.

Not him but I let it slide because Phoenix is a masterpiece....well, up to a certain point it is.
>>
>>14695229

I'm not the one constantly trolling Leiji, sorry. You got the wrong the guy. I consider him more flawed than other artists from his generation. But I'm not the "better than Lazy Matsumoto" guy.
>>
>>14695258

And I said more than once that I don't particularly care for Tezuka. I don't know why do you even brought him into this conversation. Yeah, I think most people around here are unfair towards Ishinomori and never gave him a fair chance. That used to upset me, but not anymore. I just don't care anymore.

The anime improves it in literally every way. Too bad they didn't do the fucked up space capsule chapter.

>>14695270
It was brought up because you mentioned him having a huge ego.

Also, he actually had the rights to Yamato at least one point in time. Then at another point in time he had the rights to all of the designs and names, iirc.
>>
>>14695293
I thought it was the period when Nishizaki was in prison for the guns and drugs that Matsumoto tried to just sorta call dibs on Yamato since Nishizaki wasn't around to disagree.
Like when the Yamato shows up in the 999 comics and the third movie.
>>
>>14695308
It's a shame he never got to finish Great Yamato since it was apparently setting up for a grand conclusion of what he introduced in the second run of Galaxy Express... The Mahoroba movie was supposed to be something like that too but there's been no news since like 2012.

Either way, what he used in the manga were all things he designed.

>It ain't really like Tezuka and Ishinomori's art looked any better either. In fact I put them on the same tiers of good/badness in comparison to the really good artists out in the good ol' west.

This comparison makes no sense whatsoever. Western artists had a very clear standard of quality that even the bad ones had to obey. And most of the great cartoonists from the west got completely ignored or pretty much died from popular culture after their time. Who the hell knows who Alex Raymond was these days? Almost nobody. In Japan the standard for most artists was Tezuka, if you can draw like him or even remotely similar, you could make it to the industry as long as you could come up with a popular story.

Also, the rhythm of work was completely different to the point the most prolific American comic book artist (let's assume it's Jack Kirby) didn't got even close to draw as many pages as an average japanese mangaka. Their standards were different. An japanese manga portrays the same action of an american comic in many times of the same amount of pages. If they would put the same detail level, production would be extremely slow and the industry would never be what it's nowadays.

If you ask me, I think America was embarrassed of having a comic book industry rather than embracing it like Japan did. This guy influenced Jack Kirby, Will Eisner, Carl Barks and others. He represents to the US what Tezuka was for Japan. And what he's known for these days? He became a nobody even comic book enthusiasts might have never heard of. The other day I was looking for the original Popeye comics by E.C. Segar and guess what? The only recent reprint is long out of print. America doesn't deserve the talent they got, they treat their cartoonists like crap and the only thing you can rest assured you will find if you look for is super-hero comics. And even then you will not be supporting your favorite artist, but the corporation who owned him. There's no Dynamic Pro, Ishimori Pro or Hikari Pro, the works of an artist doesn't belong to himself. It's a shame, really.

A nut job psychologist in the 50s killed it by saying super heroes where bad for the youth. Basically used the same argument that we heard a few years ago with Violent Video games. Answer was the comic code, which hurt the industry. GIs ready theme were pretty common during the war.
>>
>>14695270
I think most people are unfair towards other artists of his generation when they draw ten times better than Matsumoto who's an overrated hack. People only think his art is good, because of the anime and his anorexic looking women.

Wait, but Caniff was influenced by Flash Gordon from what I have heard. His career started slightly later.

Not to derail the thread further, but that's not true, there's plenty of publishers that print creator-owned comics, such as Image, Dark Horse, and Oni Press.
