Maybe something like Megazone 23 where the biker gang come in for a ground-exclusive attack.
>>

>About to watch this. What am I in for? Have watched votoms and layzner.

You're in for a shock, Votoms and Layzner are very 80s anime. Dougram is not. Although it was made in the early 80s it has much more in common with 70s era anime. You can see this in how the action is choreographed. Layzner and Votoms have much more dynamism than Dougram.
As far as the story goes, it's very slow. Interesting with plenty of things going on but slow. 70+ episodes explain this. The main characters motivation for fighting is a bit stupid but he's like Amuro on a mostly desert-like planet.
>>
>>14657885
Op here. Just watched the first 2 episodes, am hooked already.

Also agree with the weird faces, whats with them anorexia cheek bones?
>>

They're guerillas living in the middle of the desert. They're malnourished.
Crinn gets /fit/ as fuck with time, though.

>>14657888
I didn't know this until recently, but there's actually a game with Dougram in it: Brave Sagas (1 and 2) on the PS1.

Yeah, those are basically Takara Robot Wars, featuring Brave and other shows sponsored by Takara.

From the episodes I found on YT it never did but that wasn't even half of the total run.

Put it in a Diesel Punk setting. Gundam X, Xabungle, all that shit. Make the Deloyer colonies an attempt to terraform the post-apocaylptic Earth, with the Federation relocating offworld.

Politics. Lots and lots of politics.
>>

Well i've cleared 6 episodes since making the thread, so it seems im good.
>>
>>14658177
Like Alpha Gaiden when it had Gundam X, Xabungle and Turn A all in one setting apart from the others via time travel? Honestly it seemed to work pretty well and they put actual effort into blending them

Speaking of SRW and post-apocalyptic settings, how did the modern ones work in TTGL to the game? Was it similarly aligned with above mentioned shows of a similar atmosphere somehow?
Or did they just slam Gurren Lagen in with little finesse.
>>
>>14658247
TTGL has only been in one game technically though, and lots of space time shenanigans caused it to merge with Code Geass and other worlds.
It's a good fit with Votoms.

>>14657885
I disagree with those first two things.

>>14658515
>Is gundam not included because of bandai?
Maybe, but that wouldn't make sense as Dougram was also a series with kits and the like at the time of its airing, and we know that Gundam, on its first time airing, got less-than-stellar ratings.

Dougram's ratings alone were enough for it to get 75 as opposed to 50 episodes. That's saying something.

In regards to OP's question you're going to get a very long story with occasional drama and loads of fights and some politicking/philosophical stuff. IMO it's pretty fun, and a must watch if you want real robot action. Since you're already six episodes in I'd say just to enjoy yourself and see how things unfold.

Also, modern kits!
>>
>>14658515
Wasn't the original gundam almost cancelled?
>>
>>14657888
For some reason, i got a feel that Dougram goes well with Iron Blooded Orphans. Just replace Mars with Deloyer and it'll work
>>
>>14658618
I believe Dougram came during a time where people started to appreciate Gundam style storyline. Which is a toy commercial that has some depth into its character, story and has a generally gray moral stand point. It was to a point that even kids are smart enough to watch it.
>>
>>14658675
Dougram actually didn't seem very toyetic to me.

>No parade colours
>Very few robot models
>What robots the show does have are basically all the same except for paint job and the head (much like VOTOMS) except for the rare crab gunner which is openly stated to be outdated and crappy multiple times anyway
>Combined arms are incredibly effective. Some schmuck on foot can blow up a robot with a big enough gun

Granted, Dougram itself was practically invincible.
>>
>>14658675
I think it was less about a Gundam-style story and more just how enthralling Dougram itself was.

>>14658702
I think there were still enough Combat Armors for a good toyline, plus you got plenty of CA variants and non-CA models, such as the Crab Gunner variants, the Duey, the Mavellic, Native Dancers, Bromry trailers. etc.
>>
>>14658702
Crab Gunner is pretty kawaii
>>
>>14658752
>tfw in-scale Crab Gunners are taller than most humanoid CAs
I want Max Factory to make a modern Crab Gunner.
>>
>>14658783
That just makes them seem even more implausible and useless, what were they originally meant to combat?
>>
>>14658751
>a good toyline
also the Fang's guns and their headsets (and the episode they're introduced in) might as well have been in GI Joe
>>
>>14658751
I was wondering if they made models for the helicopters and carriers they used in the show

Pretty sure the crab gunners were counted as combat armors though
>>
>>14658702
It seemed to be under the same executive orders as whatever Gundam 0079 was under,
>large, tall mecha
>new mecha designs every now and then
>special-snowflake MC mecha that's blue yellow red
The difference seems to be like what >>14658675 says, the execs and audience started "getting" what Gundam 0079 was meant to do, allowing Takahashi to use the Armors more like tanks and allowing Okawara to be smart about using the Blue/Red/Yellow, etc.

>>
>>14658798
This logic kills all mecha. At any rate they worked, they overhwelmed the North Pole Airport, they gave Soltics a good run for their money, and generally stood as proper combatants against whatever they had to face. I like Crab Gunners.

>>14658810
They are, I was mentioning them because they have more variants than any other CA I know of. You have files and the like for the unused Fire Gunner, a model kit for a Crab Gunner with an AA platform, the Tequila Gunners that showed up in-show, and I once saw a picture of a custom Crab Gunner model which had been modified into an agricultural vehicle.
You also had the Junk Dealer variant, which mounted a crane and worked in salvage.
>>
>>14658702
>Granted, Dougram itself was practically invincible.

Well not in a desert. It got its ass kicked several times and only a suicidal bike attack on the desert crab mecha destroyed it thereby saving Dougram.
Dougram also needs a transport platform to go from point A to point B. Take out the transport you seriously inhibit Dougrams ability to move across the land.
>>
>>14658843
yeah as much as it pulls Dougramwinslol they do a decent job of giving it hurdles to clear on the way to winslol.
>>
>>14657876
Quality story telling occasionally interrupted by robots
>>
>>14658798
Until Dougram gets the Linear Cannon, there's no Combat Armor (even on enemy side) that could take a Crab Gunner head-on, because its armor is much thicker. They had to fire on them from below or above to do any significant damage.

They were released by Revell in a line called "Robotech" (unrelated to the later show) that was an attempt at cashing in on the growing robot craze. It also had Macross (!) and Orguss merch included in the line. It did okayish.

Something amusing is that there was a two issue comic made for the line, featuring oddities such as a talking, sentient Dougram. I've added a picture of this to my post.

Most importantly, this series seems to be how some of the Dougram designs bled into BattleTech.

have you tried Yahoo Japan's auctions? I've found a few pics of interest there every now and then.

Also regarding the mainstream Western sales back in the day, a thousand years ago when Epcot was EPCOT Center they sold model kits in the big gift shop.
I've heard they had various Japanese robot models back then. iirc it was mentioned by the author in one of the filler columns in the old single issue It's Science! With Dr Radium comics.

Dougram gets its ass kicked a few times, but the amount of times it gets out of fights either totally unscathed or with only one arm seriously damaged is hilariously big.

Also, the transport being a weakness is less of an issue when you consider that flatbed trucks owned by the good guys in that show are made of fucking Nintendium. I think the one they get after that whole Race thing ended up lasting them all the way until the last arc or somesuch, and was never seriously damaged in that time.

>>
>>14661438
Gasaraki isn't so much rightwinged as it just raises a few issues regarding the awkward position Japan faced in the 90's, such as the checkbook diplomacy utilized during the Gulf War.

Nishida's plan is arguably rooted in the relationship the Japanese domestic rice economy has with the world stage. To quote Wikipedia's brief article on Japanese rice production:

>As part of the government’s control of rice, rice imports are banned except in processed forms. Also, because of the disproportionate political power wielded by farmers, rice production is subsidized by the government. This aggravated trade frictions between Japan and the United States. Tokyo’s rationale for the ban is that self-sufficiency in rice is important for food security purposes. In addition domestic farm groups have long maintained that rice cultivation is part of Japanese culture. Hayami (1988) argued that Japanese consumers have become more tolerant of high rice prices because their food expenditure as a ratio of total expenditure has declined as their incomes rise(Hsu, 1994). Surprisingly, consumer groups have not actively supported the lifting of the ban in order to reduce the rice price. The main reason is reportedly the Japanese consumers’ demand for “high-quality” rice. Surveys do indicate that consumers believe that foreign rice tastes bad.[4]

There's also some interesting stuff about the rice scene in the mid-90's; Japan experienced a shortage crisis in 1994 which led to the opening of the market to foreign rice. Digging through some other material apparently prices for various grain products spiked in the early 90's as well, which falls in line with Gasaraki's what-if scenario for the second half wherein really crummy grain harvests worldwide begin to create friction between nations, leading towards Nishida coming in and essentially going "we either suffer together now, or we crash and burn as one, and I will gladly bet on Japan surviving an economic crash," more or less.

Nah. Especially at the point you're getting around to. One of the most irritating moments of the series for me is when something major looks like it's about to happen on the politics side at the end of one episode, but then the next goes off and focuses on a personal story on one of the FOTS and the prior matter doesn't get addressed at all until the episode after that.

I mean, it wasn't really a bad episode even, but the shit they left hanging was really interesting and also was a really big thing that proves to be immensely important.

People just like what they're familiar with. Chinks love Jasmine rice, Indians love Basmati rice. You see similar bias when new products like vegetable oil substitutes, processed cheese, and other cheaper alternatives hit many markets. It all disappears when supply is low and demand is high for the traditional product.

Do we have a list like this for Crinns kill count? I wonder how many combat armours he takes out over the series.

No count of Amuro's onscreen kills in Zeta and CCA?

I figure it's a mix of domestic production bias, and a developed culinary preference for the sticky white ricestuffs.

Like, imagine having a salad recipe that calls for bell peppers, but you can only find jalapenos.

Nice find. Anything else of value in it? Like differences between anime and manga?

Isn't there one right there on those pages?
Pretty sure Rocky and the gang weren't there when Samalin showed Crinn Dougram and asked him to pilot it.

I'm curious if it has the same political elements as the anime or was it done like the Gundam 0079 adaptation, where Tomino's "realistic mecha" ideas were thrown out the window.

Pic related looks true to the anime though.
