Hi, /m/
A surprising amount of my friends want me to get into Kamen Rider and I've had my eye on it for a while. Like, a few years while. I honestly don't know where to start. I only have every other Saturday to watch whatever show I want nowadays. Someone said Gaim, someone Abaranger, someone said something about Quartze. I really like that whole justice vibe it's got going out.
Help me out pls

Ishinomori's manga.
Each series is pretty much self-contained and with only four exceptions contain minimal direct reference to earlier series, so you can just pick up the new one in October if you want. Otherwise it depends on how much background you want regarding what the franchise used to be. Some people will tell you that you’re a fag who doesn’t appreciate justice if you don’t watch everything from ’71 onward, and some people will tell you that everything before 2000 (or ’87 depending on taste) is painfully bad and not worth watching at all; ignore both these memes. I’ve watched two series from the Seventies and then everything from the mid-Eighties onward, and I would say that ‘Kūga’ is the oldest show that the average millennial is likely to appreciate more or less directly, without ironic kekery or deliberately viewing it through a historical lens. Honestly you can probably imagine with fair accuracy what everything was like before 2000 without actually seeing it, but Shōwa ‘Rider’ also reveals glimpses of future brilliance amidst the cheesy effects and monotonous one-off plots, as well as some truly unique ideas that have yet to be revisited and may make you wonder what might have been.

I'm a sucker for old Godzilla films and I really like U.C Gundam's old ass animations. I'd have no problems with 70s or 80s series. I appreciate the reply.
W is the usual standard starting point nowadays, it leads into OOO and Fourze and all of those (and everything after W) has non-weebstick subs.
Kabuto was the stock starting point for a while, it's where I started, and if you don't mind things going a bit CUHRAYZEE it's a good romp.
If you're not against old-style things, there's the original Kamen Rider.

Well, the real problem with Shōwa ‘Rider’ isn’t the visuals. That merely means that there isn’t a lot of eye candy to distract you from what IS the real problem: the extreme lack of contiguous plot or character development through almost the entirety of the franchise’s first three decades. On the contrast old ‘Gundam’ may not look too pretty, but hoo boy what a story for fucking ’79.
But hey, give it a try. Be advised that the earliest series with full subs is ‘V3’ if you want to buy a DVD set, or ‘Amazon’ if you don’t. Everything from ‘ZX‘ onward is subbed, though.

Only by starting with Kabuto can you walk the path of a Rider fan.
