I think it's been long enough that we can have a calm, civilized conversation about this:

What went wrong with Pacific Rim?

Was the concept flawed from the start or did the PR people fuck it over?
>>
as far as the movie itself goes, its not a masterpiece by any means. theres a lot of inconsistencies and plot holes but its still a solid 7/10

the marketing is where it got screwed.

It was flawed from the start, and its execution was on the level of your typical bayformer.

Expected mechas vs kaijus. Got mechas vs kaijus. I was satisfied. If you're talking about why it failed with more broad audiences, it's probably just a question of (shit) taste. Transformers is an old childhood property for many, so adults think it's fine to watch 'ironically' for nostalgia. Mecha as a genre is still looked down on by a vast majority.

>>14648687
>eva clone
>pacific rim
Is this sarcasm? Because apart from mind-linked control of a giant robot (which eva did not invent, and worked notably differently in PR), Pacific Rim was nothing at all like eva. I legitimately can't tell if this is sarcasm, so apologies if it is, but the only possible way you'd think eva was at all similar to PR is either you don't watch any other mecha, or you didn't watch Pacific Rim.

I'm ignored every time I say this, but Pacific Rim is Batman Begins. It's safe, it's predictable, it's paint by the numbers, and every single one of these is intentional. Like Batman Begins it exists for one reason alone, to make enough money for a sequel so the director can make the movie he actually wanted. In interviews with del toro he mentions that a lot of material was cut, and he was going to go hog wild with the sequel.

But in this case the approach was a failure. While PR made enough money overseas (Thank you China, Russia, and South Korea) the sequel is now looking like a total mess. No Beacham, No Del Toro. So I'm going to assume the world building and material they set aside for the sequel is going into the trash.

Because the first film took no risks, people are going to see it as bland.

At least Adam Sandler last movie was a disaster, so that might be it for him.

It's actually kind of sad that he looks so tired of life. Considering how much me makes, and that he apparently has many friends, he always looks so miserable.

Think of it this way. Adam Sandler is not funny. He's not an actor and he isn't relevant. What does this mean? Adam Sandler is a great Hollywood businessman. He knows how to play the system and keeps getting his films made. The man is dead inside. He's a shuckster who lives for nothing but cash making the most terrible movies you can pitch to a group of idiots.

Too many plotholes, major inconsistency, and a hard ending without any legitimate hint of a possible sequel, unlike Marvel movies with their secret credits preview or Transformers with some sort of monologue about how it's not really the end. The bit about the goddamn shoe doesn't count as a sequel tease.

Also, a distinct lack of more Jaeger action. Cherno and Crimson jobbed in the same battle they sortied for. Eureka was also useless in the same initial debut. All 3 of them didn't get much action outside of some news flashback or mention. Coyote also only got "shown" as part of a nightmare flashback, not even showing Pentacost at least appearing out of the machine as her actual savior.

And overall, it just felt rushed.

Anyway, does anyone know the pixiv artist's account for the Femacost/Kawaijiu/Jaegirls 4komas? Or if there's still any work being done on the series? Last I heard, said artist was working on a PacRim/KanColle crossover, but would continue the series. The anonymous translator quit translating them though, and there were a few more 4komas before the whole thing just disappeared like the PacRim threads.

The best way to save this series is combine it with Godzilla.

They fight each other initially thinking the other is the enemy, but then bam, aliens show up, angrier then ever and wanting revenge, but the Jaegers and Godzilla kick their asses back through the portal. They follow, with God-fucking-zilla just tearing the portal open for the Jaegers before diving through itself, and they completely tear the Aliens a new one and setting them back a few thousand years.

i loved the movie.

Personally I don't understand the criticisms about plot holes since they devoted the first 20min of the movie on exposition and world building. If you can't connect it with things later on in the film, it's not the fault of the writing.

The thing I had a problem with is that Cherno and Typhoon go out like scrubs almost immediately after being hyped up.

Actually, it IS like Eva. If you squint really hard and take a look, there are some similarities.

For one, Raleigh is sort-of Shinji and the Marshall is sort-of Gendou. But the movie, from the very bottom-up, is from a Western perspective of things. It is what you would get if you gave a Western director an outline of what would happen and told him to make a movie based on that.

I'm not saying this is bad, by any sense of the word. It is, however, a very different perspective the way anime reflects a different cultural background from cartoons.

For instance, in Evangelion, no-one actually cares about defeating the Angels. They're just buying time to end the world in their own way. Here, everyone is genuinely on-board with saving the world. Sure there are rivalries and secrets, but the goal is still to win for the home team. They're all on the same side: In EVA, everyone was stabbing each other in the back or withdrawing into their own private hells.

In fact, the Jaegers are exactly what would you get if the Americans designed an Eva.

> "What? This thing runs off the souls of dead mothers and only works for traumatized children? Fuck then, you're fired."
> "We're going to rebuild it, and make sure the system works for a grown man this time. I'm not having a fucking 14-year-old pilot this, I'm getting Chris Kyle."

In fact, the Australian's son has a very Asuka-esque personality. Except the Marshall figures him out and he eventually uses it to positive effect, instead of everyone slowly crumbling from the private horrors they can't communicate to each other.

It's a very Western movie from the start to the end, and you get that 'Evangelion, but American' feeling all the time. What would the West do when the sky-vagina ripped open and all the freaky End of Eva shit happened? They wouldn't curl into a ball and let ennui devour them, they would load down a robot with every fucking N2 Mine they could find and re-enact the ending of Independence Day.
>>
>>14650507
>For one, Raleigh is sort-of Shinji
Not in the slightest.
Raleigh is a retired pilot with trauma. Shinji is a random kid that is the chosen one.
>Marshall is sort-of Gendou.
Again, no.
In fact, I could make a better argument that Raleigh and Marshall mirror Getter Robo Go Ryouma and Hayato. But honestly, the retired pro coming back to fight again with the hardass coach isn't exactly revolutionary.

Your entire post is equally dumb because Pacific Rim is nothing like Evagenlion even superficially.
>>
>>14649173
I saw your meme earlier in the thread, you didn't need to drag me into this.

>>14650507
(warning, incoming autism)

I don't even see it with the squinting. They both crib from the same sources, sure, but neither one implements those in a similar way. Pacific rim looks more like fucking Godannar then it does Eva. Eva is a series about adolescence, secrets and lies, generation conflict, relies on depressing themes, has religious and philosophical references, etc. Pacific Rim has none of this. They aren't even similar on a superficial level. None of the robots look like organic mecha, none of the monsters look geometric shapes. None of the characters are alike. The basic plots aren't even the same.

One of the things Anno said was important to the mecha genre (a father or grandfather being responsible for constructing the mecha the protagonist uses) is absolutely absent in Pacific Rim. The robots are built by nations, and never are we given much insight to the builders. (Even in the comic the first one was made by some random guy, and the robot was piloted by his ex lover intern.)

Two the dual pilot thing is an essential part of PR and the lore. You aren't in there alone. In eva, several times in eva the isolation of the pilot/pilots is a essential theme. (all though I will concede both shows seem to have a "ghost in the machine")

Second is the family relationships. Stacker is not Raleigh's father. He's not even Raleigh's father figure. He's his boss. They have a purely working relationship. Granted Stacker is Mako's daughter, but given that the two genuinely care for each other, no strings attached, I don't think it's fair to compare it to Gendo's relationship with Rei, when that revolved around the fact that it was clearly a loaded, strings attached relationship. Mako wasn't an object (a beloved object mind you) that could be replaced at any time. She was Stacker's daughter who he didn't want to let go
>>
>Make a movie about alien invaders trying to take over someone else's home and drastically change it
>Wait a few years
>Say Europe needs open borders and to let in all the rapeugees

Del Toro is dead to me. The film was a fun summer movie but this lack of awareness and hatred for Europe makes me see him as an enemy of my people now.
>>
>>14649415
Didn't know about Die Antwood until Chappie (wish I still didn't) but they make great comedy characters. If you watch Chappie as a comedy it's a great film.
>>
>>14650795
>>Say Europe needs open borders and to let in all the rapeugees
You guys were the ones that promoted that shit in the first place. Fug off yuropoor
>>
>>14650791
Then there is the machines themselves. In Eva it's an essential part of the plot that the Evas are just nigger rigged Angels. They are Prometheus stolen fire. Power taken from the enemy used against the enemy, and not fully understood. In PR it is the exact opposite theme. "Monsters? Fuck that shit, we will build monsters!" There is no kaiju tech in the Jaegers at all. It's not reverse engineered. It's purely human science creating ways to fight monsters, on their own, with their own ingenuity.

Another thing is how Eva and PR handle adult hood and generational gaps. It's worth noting that Eva is about adolescence, and PR has no adolescences themes at all. Zip. Zero. Zilch. (Granted PR has very few themes in general, it's a very shallow affair, and I've admitted as such). PR is about adults, and adult relationships. Like Stacker refusing to admit that Mako had grown up, the fucked up relationship between Herc and Chuck, etc. The generational conflict is also worth noting. In Eva we see three generations. The shadowy leaders, the people who run the base and teach the pilots, and the teenagers the first two generations force to do battle for them. In PR the previous generations were part of the fight, handing off to the next generation when they inevitably died, or couldn't hack it anymore.

Okay rant over. Call me autistic now.
>>
>>14650795
You'll also notice the film said

>>

It's impossible to separate creator and politics from the work they make. Consider the "everyone's a sexist/racist" marketing scheme they keep trying since Star wars. Warner Bros. is total shit at marketing films in general. That happens when you go more then ten years with a tentpole every year that doesn't really need marketing; your marketing team no longer knows what they're doing. >>
>>14654759
>In what way is it a deconstruction?

There isn't any.

Most Evafags that use it when referencing NGE has no idea what it means and just use it as a buzzword to validate their own agenda. The actual definition of deconstruction is to take classical elements (of a genre) and present them in a different way that deviates from the conventional manner. No themes or elements from NGE is presented in a unique or original way when it came out which means it's not a "deconstruction" of any sort.

His horn is the best.
Nearly came the first time I heard it
The way they were drowning for a couple seconds before that faggot finished them off wasn't right

If you honestly think Eva is anything like PacRim, you've seen even less mecha than the typical /a/ user

TONS of mecha anime have kaiju, mind-control and 70 m scale.

Add to this that mind-link gel/liquid is as old as it comes

Evafags are so deluded. In the early 80s, Rogue Trader was talking about pilots bathed in amniotic fluid in a control cask inside the dreads

The triple character cast of "Reluctant Main Character / Silent Mysterious Loner / Loud Angry Hotshot" is ALSO as old as time. Eva did not come up with this.

Not very memorable?

I remember Robot Jox more than I remember PR.
