I want something lighthearted and funny with occasional moments of srs business and robot fighting.
Fullmetal Panic
Dai-Guard
Mazinger Z, or any super robot show from the 70s in the same vein
>>14612827 Or this
seriously Dai Guard

Brigadoon
Gaiking LODM
Patlabor

Yup, Dai-Guard is definitely what you are searching for, OP.
You can also try:
Patlabor
Mutekiou Tri-Zenon
Goldran
Most of fantasy mecha shows for children, like Ryuu Knight, Wataru and Granzort
Majestic Prince
Most of the stuff I was going to recommend has been recommended (like Dai Guard). There's also:
Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventures
The three Eldoran shows (Gosaurer doesn't have subs though)
Ryuseiji Gakusaver
Metal Armor Dragonar (to an extent)
Star Driver
ruri likes oink oink
>>14612756
KingGainer and Eureka seven
Vandread

Does it need to be focused on mechs over spaceships? Tenchi Muyo GXP. I loved it from beginning to end.Though I wish the ending actually showed the wedding.
It follows the standard rule of Tenchi Muyo in which everything is more interesting than Tenchi in his own universe.
Gun x Sword is good
I want Xabungle too OP, but they didn't make any more.

Gun X Sword is a good pick.
