How would a rapier would even work in mecha combat, stabbing anywhere but the cockpit won't do jackshit to your opponent. Not to mention since you can't exactly cut metal with a pointy metal stick the rapier would be stuck in any part of the enemy's body after you stab them.

I like how for the first time ever, a moving scarbbard is implemented so that you can actually know how the mech take the sword out, unlike every other katana wielding mech where the sword magically phase through the scarbbard as the mech unsheath it e.g. Astray Red, Lancelot from CG, Kamiki Gundam.

The frame, notably the head shape certainly looks like Kimaris and the rapier fits right in with the slight Gyan inspiration it had.

Thrusters on the legs are the same placement as vanilla Kimaris and the front skirts look like the vanilla ones only fused though that's stretching it for similarities on both points.

I think it could very well be Kimaris Repair or similar. If they wanted a "bad guy" who turns good kind of character, Gaelio certainly would be their best choice and he has THE best reasons to fight McGilis. He was undoubtedly the most sympathetic character in season 1 too so it seems dumb to kill him off when no one else is left to feel for, even Ein is dead.

But it's pretty hard to imagine ChocoChar messing up killing him (yet iirc he didn't actually damage the cockpit in the episode but I don't think they consider things like that in IBO with the girls living through Ein's rampage). Also this would imply that somehow his body and suit (priceless family heirloom) weren't recovered and his family didn't think it strange and just went "guess he's dead if Blondie says so!".

Plus he'd had to have like, gotten help by someone who both knew not to go "HEY NOTCHAR, YOUR BEST FRIEND IS ALIVE!" immediately upon checking on him, and to hide away the suit, and having the means to.

No it's much more likely, if it is Kimaris, that a certain someone is using it to get supposed revenge on some certain Space Rats.

Better than a katana would in a practicality wise concept (thrusting a pointy pole into the cockpits), DESU. A katana would rely too much on speed for effectiveness considering that they are fighting hunks of metal and not a wooden armored samurai or peasant. Realistic medieval swords (these can be nice multi-purpose weapons) would be ever better. Especially, in ground combat melees. I miss Guymelefs...

It wouldn't be surprising to me if the rapier blades were design to snap off or eject for replacements.

Beam sabers are still one of the best options for simplicity and effectiveness in use. They could never be as compact as they are are with IBO's tech level, but ancient lost technology can be used as an excuse. A beam great sword prototype would be fun though. Maybe with a radiator gauntlet for any heating issues.

It really remains to be seen. Thus far IBO has been laughably bad at death scenes, about the most definitive thing was Carta's grunts getting pasted during the duel. Several grunts at most took a shell to the Graze's head or got flipped on their backs and then just disappeared. Carta sat in an intact cockpit yet sprouted all that blood, had her cockpit flood despite it being well above the water line, then up and expired from god-only-knows-what. Then we had all the blatant fake-outs near the end, Lafter's spatter and Shino doing his best Lockon impression down to the bloody eye.

Gaelio didn't even take a wound, then McGillis stabs at his cockpit, the tip deflects off it (but shatters the armor plate) and impales just to one side. Big spurt of oil. McGillis waxing on about "you were my only friend". Then slumped-over Kimaris face. No grunt, no crying out, nothing definitive of any sort. Either they were needlessly vague (again) or the entire thing was a heavyhanded fake-out (again).

Gundam tends to do this thing where they overly humanize the mech. Sometimes a GM loses its head and it just topples over completely. Or they give a suit a good smack and the pilot gets a gash across their face, because for some reason they had their helmet open or completely off, and the monitors are all shatterable glass and the control panels are explosively unstable.
