Tobia basically lives in a separate universe from most of the rest of UC Gundam. He might as well live in the G Gundam universe since he pulls off so much silly stuff and the whole manga seems to contradict the tone of UC so much. Stuff like him planting bombs is cool, but I honestly find it more impressive when Garrod holds up a mobile suit than when Tobia does, even though it's less impressive sounding on a paper, because the atmosphere and setting of X make it seem a lot harder than Crossbone does.

It had nice gimmicks that kept it from falling into the sameyness most lead Gundam's have. The shield/cannon/flightpack 3 way setup was a nice touch. Even the beam saber hilts looked different than usual.

Couple reasons

His relationship with Tifa is believable. They didn't fall for eachother all at once but when Tiffa got taken to space, Garrod freaked the fuck out.

He doesn't like to angst. The crew managed to snap him out of his afformented freak out and subsequent catatonia in a couple minutes.

He's not a good man. Not necessarily evil but not totally good. There's this lovable scoundrel thing going on.

He thinks his way out. Unlike SOME protags who win by virtue of yelling alot or for no reason in particular, Garrod actually uses his head. That stunt in the first episode? That's Garrod being clever and gutsy.

Bright and Mirai is probably the most realistic relationship in Gundam since it deals with them after having kids and problems in their marriage like a desire to cheat, but the execution of those is pretty light and it's hard to feel invested it because they themselves interact so little in Zeta, ZZ or CCA - even in 0079 they're not so much a romantic couple as comrades like you say. They're a very weird couple in many ways, both likable and forgettable because of how it's done.
