Well in that case, I'll just go ahead and recommend Sins without any caveats. It's really grim and frequently depressing but it's also high quality, it just made the raging boner I have for Madhouse all the stronger.

It's one of those rare shows that makes you think hard about what it presents in a good way instead of a dumb EVERYTHING IS SYMBOLISM, LOOK AT HOW DEEP AND MEANINGFUL WE ARE kind of way. I fucking hate Rahxephon.

This. I was expecting a Star Wars-esque ending where the rebels sweep in and win a crushing, high-spirits victory and the show ends in a high note.

But Dougram was just so fucking good and consistent with its portrayal of military movement, that even ten episodes before the end, you realize that won't happen. The enemy has larger and larger forces, and in the end, they just make some sad compromise. Crinn and co are washed up rebels who fell just short with no more driving purpose. Except to steal Dougram and ditch it in the desert. It was a sad and sobering ending about the fate of most rebellions in history.

Sure, it was kinda sad in the moment, but ultimately, the ending was representative of Japan finally putting World War 2 behind. Shotaro got all the answers he was looking for and got to use Tetsujin to protect people as he had wanted.

I mean yeah, it has kind of a "giant robots are dumb, grow up" kinda feel to it all, but it didn't really bother me since Shotaro was having a hard time letting go of the past himself and the ending allowed him to do just that.
