My favourite Zaku II variant is the F2, it plays with the original design's proportions and details a bit to really tighten up the design without looking like a different MS like the FZ.

Out of all the Zaku descendants, I like Geara Doga best.

The first time I watched Gundam. It's immediately obvious. Took me a long time to get over the fact.

I do like the Zulu better than the Doga though. The Doga was a thick bulky suit in a time full of thick bulky suits, I prefer the leaner look of the Zulu

I would imagine it just uses engineering and internal layout that is very similar if not the same as a Zaku, except with standardized parts and remodeled armor. Maybe it can be produced on a Zaku factory line with minor changes as opposed to needing completely new tooling.

I think Izubuchi originally intended that his Zaku was just the way all Zakus looked. His 0080 artbook also depicts the Zaku FZ being used in combat way earlier than it should have been. We know it as a late war variant, but this picture says February 0079.
