She loves him but Gaea is not her place, merely a dreamworld that happens to be real.
She still has family, friends and school back on Earth in the same manner as how her granny left Gaea and Alan's father behind to focus on reality.
This is in contrast to Newton's excessive fiddling with a place which he doesn't belong to and the suffering that he brought with him.

But yeah, the ending was a bit heartbreaking and obviously rushed due to shortened production run the show ended up with.

ending got rushed because japan was in a funk when escaflowne aired (mixed with a lot of just fucking sideways issues during production that 9/10 times never come up (will get into this at the end)). Basically, it aired right after gundam wing and eva finished and people were not really accepting new mecha anime after it. So it got low air ratings (was much bigger in the US than japan despite fox kids treatment, cancellation and no marketing) and just sorta... faded away.

As for the production problems, escaflowne actually had multiple 'versions' from the getgo. I forget the 3 people who wanted it to go the way it did (I think it was the lead producer, director and designer), but all 3 had conflicting ideas of how the story should go, and basically all 3 got their version in different mediums. The show was the directors way, and it had 2 different manga (one shojo and one shonen) and all 3 had vastly different everything with little crossover between the 3.

For example, in the manga, dilandau was dark skinned spanish dude and wanted to fuck vans mom, who was still alive. escaflowne had a couch, hitome did a sailor moon esque transformation and was made of crystals. pic related. Its dilandau

The only reason the movie got made (which shocked fucking EVERYONE) was because it was a pet project of someone high up at bandai.

Kanno's music feels to me like there are five hundred completely individual personalities living inside her. Add to that the (definite and unassailable) fact that it is impossible to listen to a piece of her music without your head filling with twenty five other compositions from whence they were devised - and I start to suspect and worse. The techniques she uses are all so firmly rooted in the classical tradition, you have to assume somebody with a solid classical background is doing this stuff. It's all well-arranged fluff, but there's no individuality.

Yeah, it's pretty well known at this point that Kanno is a plagiarist and huge liar, especially when she says that she "never listens to any music" in all her interviews. But I'll be damned if she doesn't have good taste in music. Wonder why she's been so quiet these past few years.
