I think it's because it reaches above its station with its Gundam-styled head. Mass production units are supposed to have visors, not eyes and V-fins. Put in a series that already has too many Gundams, and an entire MP line of them just comes across as kind of lame.

The Astray is pretty fucking ugly, the DSSD version is much better.

The M1 doesn't even feel/look like a grunt doing its own thing, it doesn't have its own aesthetic, it's just one more Gundam except it's mass produced for Orb/the Three Ship Alliance and that's how you know they're super goodest guys, even their mass production machines are Gundam. CE is already bloated with Gundams since pretty much every single important/powerful machine is one, it didn't need to also have a mass production version.

As long as your vision is at least 20/70 and can be corrected via glasses to 20/20 you can be an Air Force pilot. Civilian pilots can wear glasses too. It's not like they have much choice since vision impairment is so wide spread these days and only going to get more so since reading of any kind is what causes most vision degradation - including from computer screens. If they didn't accept people with corrective measures to hit 20/20 they'd probably have no candidates in a few decades.
