Nobunagun was awesome, but hampered by a budget comparable to KMB, or Teekyuu.
The manga itself has a really cool artstyle too, although I don't think its been translated.

I usually hate Anime youtube critics but I agree with him 100% about SDF's use of Minmay was less about idols saving the day and more about culture persevering over war, with Minmay as a vehicle to demonstrate it.

The rest of the Macross shows just kind of do whatever the hell they want with music, and while I love Sharon Apple, Fire Bomber, and Shery Nome, I don't think any of them really hit the same notes, and music is treated a lot more like various pseudo magic powers. Doesn't help that Kawamori mostly follows what's currently trendy in Japanese pop music instead of actually playing around with various genres.

Gundam's guilty of getting all weird and inconsistent with it's themes too, but Gundam also has the excuse of being made by many different people. I kind of feel like Kawamori's slowly losing his touch, and while he can put out a few good songs in his shows, I'm starting to think that he should take a back seat to a younger director with some better ideas and focus more on producing and mechanical design.

Yeah, I think the resonating through culture angle was more interesting and heartfelt than magical science waves. I'm not opposed to magic singing powers but now it just feels like something tacked onto the series like a love triangle as opposed to being the thematic soul of Macross.
